2nd Generation Porsche Cayman S launched in India

Volkswagen group owned German sportscar and SUV maker Porsche, has three distinct lines of sportscars: the 911 Carrera, the Boxster and the Cayman. The Cayman is situated between the Boxster and the 911 in terms of positioning and performance, as an affordable, high performance hard top Porsche. In a nutshell, the Cayman is aimed at car enthusiasts wanting the Porsche experience at a lighter price tag. Talking prices, Porsche India has priced the Cayman S at 92.27 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Maharashtra.

The car, imported into India through the completely built unit (CBU) route, is significantly more expensive than the first generation version. The S suffix to the Cayman moniker signifies the car's higher performance when compared to what the regular Cayman variant delivers. The Cayman S is powered by a 3.4 liter-6 cylinder Boxer engine that outputs 325 Bhp of peak power and 370 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 7 speed-dual clutch automatic gearbox.

The mid engine-gearbox combination transmits torque to the rear wheels of the car, making for impressive performance figures. Porsche claims that the car hits the 100 Kph mark from standstill in 4.9 seconds while top speed is a heady 281 Kph. The latest version of the Cayman S that's been launched in India is a second generation model and one that comes with a slew of changes. While the looks of the car get a once over with new headlamps, day time running lamps and new exhaust tips, the car's other changes are more structural in nature.

For instance, the chassis is an all new, stiffer item that makes for sharper handling. The wheelbase goes up by 60 mm while the front track gets wider by 40 mm. Apart from the change in dimensions, the monocoque body of the Cayman S is now built on an aluminum-steel mix, allowing for a 30 kilogram weight reduction. Porsche claims that the suspension bits have been lightened while the hydraulic power steering makes way for an electro-mechanical unit.

Other significant changes on the 2nd generation Porsche Cayman S include a revised PASM system with 4 additional sensors for better damping control in the Normal and Sport modes, bigger brakes for better stopping performance, 19 inch wheels with tyres that have a larger foot print, an electric parking brake, a keyless entry system and finally, adaptive cruise control. On the inside, Porsche claims improvements to the  ergonomics even as the usual once over that cars undergoing a generation change see, is standard on the new Cayman. The Burmester sound system is another notable feature when it comes to the creature comfort front.
