Advice needed: Cheap, fuss free scooter for short commutes

Our main requirement is a fuss free vehicle that will start on command, does not need pampering and will last for at least a decade.

BHPian clix22 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Dear friends,

Here is the situation. I have a holiday home in Pondicherry that we visit approximately once in 2 months. We stay for a minimum of a week to 10 days each trip.

The house is located away from public transport and so need something to help us get to local shops etc. The round trip will be 3 km approximately. Initially thought of a used scooter (honda / suzuki) but used prices for 3 to 5 year old scooters are just marginally lower than new ones and most of the scooters on olx etc look abused and tired. I am attracted by the TVS XL 100 due to its low capital cost (52k on the road) and running costs.

Our main requirement is a fuss free vehicle that will start on command, does not need pampering and will last for at least a decade. Have no need for fancy digital guages, blue tooth etc.

Am very new to the scooter world so any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Here's what BHPian comfortablynumb had to say on the matter:

TVS XL, TVS Zest, TVS Scooty Pep - Any one of these would be more than enough for your purposes, and would cost less than 70k on road. Zest and Pep will have space in front to keep some stuff like groceries, veggies etc., which TVS XL won't.

Here's what BHPian aargee had to say on the matter:

Pondicherry has abundant of rental two-wheelers, especially the commuter segments including scooters.

Why waste money on buying one when you're going to use it hardly for 2 months in a year especially with servicing & insurance?

Simply rent a scooter whenever you're there & return it when you leave. Will work like hardly 3-4K + fuel for a week's time & once you're a regular customer, the prices will come down further.

Here's what BHPian shancz had to say on the matter:

The XL100 is ideally suited for this purpose, IMO.

The larger wheels help in bad roads and so does the suspension which I doubt any scooter would be able to match.

Provided you like it after driving, it feels very light as compared to even the Activa and whether its a good thing or bad is a personal preference.

If getting a scooter, be prepared to use the kick once the battery runs out due to low usage and that would require you to mount it on the mainstand before the kick can be operated. Honestly its a nuisance if you have multiple stops but these scooters are designed to be used with the electric starter.

Maintenance schedule is similar for both type of vehicles.

IIRC only the Jupiter and the XL100 can fit a gas cylinder on its floorboard, if its of any use to you.
