Bajaj considering RE60 quadricycle for personal space

Bajaj Auto revealed the RE60 quadricycle in January 2012. In 2013, The Government of India approved the new class of vehicles in the commercial space. However, due to various legal issues, Bajaj has not been able to introduce the vehicle in the market. The company is now considering the car for the non-commercial segment.

At present, the government does not allow quadricycles to be used for non-commercial purposes. However, Bajaj says a three-wheeler, which is widely used for commercial purposes, can be registered as a personal vehicle, while a two-wheeler, which is bought mainly for personal use, is used for commercial purposes too. Bajaj has questioned the belief of some people in the industry and government that two-wheelers are safe for personal use and thereby approved, while a four-wheeled quadricycle isn't.

If it is launched, the RE60 is likely to be positioned between the autorickshaw and the Tata Nano and could make an affordable family car.

Bajaj has invested Rs. 550 crore in the RE60 project. The company’s plant has a production capacity of 60,000 units per year.

The RE60 is powered by a 216cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke petrol engine. CNG and LPG versions have also been developed.
