Bikes which are overpriced in used market: Enthusiasts share their take

Old Royal Enfield Bullets sell for nearly 2L, while high mileage Gen 1 KTM 390 Duke & RC still go for over 1.5L.

BHPian V0rtex recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I feel that Royal Enfield Bullets are overpriced. I get that they have a quite hardcore fanbase but spending 2 lakhs for a 30-year-old Bullet that isn't even mechanically sound never seemed justifiable to me. The next overpriced bike that I can think of is the 390 Duke/RC. Even though they are quite cheap in the rest of the states. But, I think that it's ridiculously overpriced in my state. Gen 1 bikes with high mileage are sold in around 1.5-1.8 lakhs range.

Here's what GTO had to say on the matter:

New car/bike prices are set by the manufacturer. They could be overpriced or under.

However, used vehicle places are set by the real world...the actual market. As long as customers are buying vehicles at the said prices, I wouldn't consider it overpriced at all. The right price is the one that the car/bike owner and buyer agree upon. Whether it's a 30,000 rupee Hero Splendor or a 6-crore rupee vintage Cadillac.

The only exception would be the creation of cartels (like we see in Bangalore) where a group of dealers control the inventory, especially in the mid to premium segments. Now that is manipulation of the market.

Here's what BHPian b16h22 had to say on the matter:

If you are talking about KL prices, it has to be CBR250Rs. Every single bike has 4-5+ owners, done 50k+ asking 1.3-1.8L and is in really poor condition. You can still see poorly maintained first batch 2011-2012 non-ABS bikes with 60-1L on the clock with 1L+ asking prices. I simply gave up looking for a decent one in 2023.

The second bike that comes to mind is the Ninja 300 non-ABS import. Still asks close to 2.2-2.5L for 7-10-year-old bikes here.

Here's what BHPian am1m had to say on the matter:

Have gotten some shade from the 2-strokers for stating this before, but I think in general any two-stroke from the 90s is overpriced today, especially in Bangalore.

I'm not saying those bikes were not exciting. I was lucky enough (or rather am old enough!) to have ridden a lot of them in college in the 90s. And I owned a Shogun myself. They were really fun! But what I see now is a lot of unscrupulous mechanics and sellers who are fleecing younger riders by quoting ridiculous rates for bikes that have very little of the 'original' in them. Simply in the name of nostalgia and brand.

There is that rare individual who has taken the pains to restore one of these bikes ground up. Some threads on this forum show that. But it is very unlikely that any of those bikes will be up for sale!

So all I'm saying is buyer beware. IMHO why pay significantly more just for nostalgia and a bike that's not 'original' anyway?
