BS-IV vehicle registrations to stop on June 30, 2020

The government of India has issued a draft notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules that will prevent the registration of new BS-IV compliant vehicles after June 30, 2020.

As per the draft, BS-IV complaint vehicles built before April 1, 2020 must be registered before June 30. Furthermore, BS-IV compliant goods and public carriers manufactured before April 1, 2020 and sold as a drive away chassis shall not be registered after September 30, 2020.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is open to discussions and has invited suggestions from stakeholders and members of the public. Suggestions can be sent by December 20, 2017. The final draft will come into force on the date of final publication in the official gazette.

The latest development comes in the wake of the government’s decision to skip BS-V and directly enforce BS-VI emission norms by April 1, 2020. Meanwhile, BS-VI grade fuels will be available in Delhi and its surrounding areas from April 1, 2018.
