EV home charging satisfaction levels drop, finds new study

It included 13,860 participants with 2017-2023 model year EV and plug-in hybrids and ran from Dec 2022 to Feb 2023.

According to a recent study by JD Power, the overall satisfaction levels towards home charging EVs have fallen year-on-year. The findings are part of the 2023 EV Experience Home Charging Study, which rates owner satisfaction with many L2 chargers in the US market.

As per the results, the satisfaction levels of home charging EVs fell by 12 points overall to 740 on a 1000-point scale. The reason for the drop in satisfaction levels can be attributed to the rising cost of electricity and the charging speeds. JD Power even stated that owners of EV models from 2022 and 2023 are less satisfied with their home charging speeds when compared to owners of MY2021 and MY2020 EVs - this is a surprising result, considering the fact that newer EVs have better-charging technology, translating to better charging speeds than older models.

JD Power partnered with PlugShare for the study. It included 13,860 participants with 2017-2023 model year EV and plug-in hybrids and ran from Dec 2022 to Feb 2023. The study also measured EV owner's satisfaction levels in eight major areas: Retail price, cord length, size of charger, ease of storing cable, cost of charging, charging speed, ease of use and reliability.

Based on the results, JD Power also came up with suggestions to help EV owners improve their satisfaction with home charging. These included - knowing your utility provider, scheduling your charging, choosing the right location and upgrading to Level 2 chargers.
