Former Porsche R&D Chief arrested over diesel gate scandal

Wolfgang Hatz - former Research & Development Head at Porsche, was arrested in Munich. The arrest is in connection with the role played by him in the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal.

Last year, Hatz was suspended from Porsche in the wake of the emissions scandal. Subsequently, he resigned from the company. Prosecutors want to know if he had any knowledge about the cheating devices used to keep emissions under check in the labs, but caused more pollution in real world conditions.

So far, Volkswagen has incurred losses of over US$ 30 billion in penalties and other expenditure to rectify the engines affected by the scandal. It appears that the German and other European authorities want a more thorough investigation - similar to their American counterparts.

Leading unto the September 24 elections, various politicians have stated that Germans deserve to receive the same compensation as what has been given to the American customers.
