Honda City Hybrid revealed; India launch on cards

Honda has revealed the 2020 City Hybrid for the Malaysian market. This version is rumoured to reach our shores by mid-2021.

The City gets an i-MMD hybrid system similar to the Jazz Hybrid. It's a proper hybrid that can run solely on electric power as well. The car is said to have three driving modes, which enable it to run on petrol, hybrid or full-electric power.

The City Hybrid uses a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 97 BHP and 127 Nm and two electric motors. One of the electric motors is integrated in the petrol engine and acts as an integrated starter generator (ISG). The other powers the front wheels via a single, fixed-ratio gearbox. It generates 108 BHP and 253 Nm.

At present, the fifth generation Honda City is available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 119 BHP and 145 Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel that makes 98 BHP and 200 Nm. The petrol engine is offered with a 6-speed manual and 7-speed CVT, while the diesel comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

In India, the City Hybrid could compete with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which is powered by a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid powertrain.
