Honda EVs could get extra storage space in bumpers

A third party can access the compartment while keeping the rest of the car off-limits.

According to media reports, Honda has submitted a patent application to the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) regarding an extra storage compartment hidden in the bumpers of electric vehicles.

The patent details a slide-out drawer on the rear bumper of an EV. Reports state that the storage compartment is designed for a future wherein vehicles can be designated as delivery locations. Leaving a package in the storage compartment is more secure than on the front porch of a house.

As per the patent, a third party can access the compartment while keeping the rest of the car off-limits. The bumper storage will have its own locking/unlocking mechanism, separate from the car's doors & boot. The storage space will also have its own AC - allowing packages to be kept in even on a hot day.

Having said that, like any other patent application, it remains to be seen whether or not Honda actually brings the idea into production.
