Honda patents its latest motorcycle crash detection system

Based on this diagnosis, the tech decides whether an emergency call is required or not.

Honda is said to be developing a new motorcycle crash detection system, which not only alerts if a crash has occurred but is also able to decipher if the rider is unconscious or not.

According to reports, Honda's new technology uses the motorcycle's IMU and an array of sensors to detect a crash. The tech also links to the rider's smartphone and helmet-mounted Bluetooth headset to decipher whether or not the rider is lying still or moving about. Based on this diagnosis, the tech decides whether an emergency call is required or not.

Reports suggest that the tech can detect when the rider has dropped the bike on its side at a driveway and decide that an emergency call isn't required.

While the system does sound interesting, it will be interesting to see how accurate the decision to call emergency services will be. Also, if the rider isn't wearing a Bluetooth headset, would the tech still work as intended, relying on just the data from a smartphone.
