Hyundai beats Toyota to become the world's largest FCEV maker

Hyundai currently occupies 51.7% market share in the global FCEV segment

Hyundai Motor has surpassed Toyota to become the world's largest Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) manufacturer. Hyundai overtook the sales of its Japanese rival in the first half of the year, with the release of its updated NEXO model.

According to a media report, the Hyundai NEXO FCEV SUV recorded sales of 4,700 units globally in the first six months of the 2021 calendar year - a growth of 62.7%, compared to the same period in 2020.

The NEXO received a facelift in January 2021, which also helped Hyundai recover from its slump in the FCEV market and occupy a 51.7% market share in the first half.

Toyota also registered a massive growth in yearly sales, thanks to the solid demand for the 2nd-gen Mirai FCEV. However, it only managed to register around 3,700 units in the first six months of this year. The Toyota Mirai takes up a 40.9% market share in the FCEV segment globally.

Rounding off the top three was Honda, with its Clarity model. However, the Japanese brand occupies just a 1.6% market share in the FCEV segment.
