Hyundai wants to combine tech features with analogue controls

Producing retro concepts helps force designers to come up with ways in which they can integrate digital features with analogue controls.

According to media reports, Hyundai's head of design Hak Soo Ha believes there is still a place for analogue controls in modern technology-filled cars.

Speaking at the Canadian International Auto Show, Hak Soo Ha stated that one of the reasons the company is looking into and producing retro concepts is to force its designers to come up with ways in which they can integrate digital features with analogue controls.

The designer mentioned his mixed feelings about touchscreens and all-digital interiors on modern cars. He said that though he is interested in something new and fresh as a designer, it cannot be the only consideration. He added that as an automotive designer, one must also consider the human factor, ergonomics & safety.

Hak Soo Ha explained with an example related to autonomous vehicles, stating that if one takes out the steering wheel, one takes out what's automotive and is left with what Soo Ha describes as a "house on wheels". He added that with modern cars going all digital, touchscreen and buttonless, he wants a design which offers a good mix of digital and analogue.

This news comes just days after Chevy removed the physical light switch from its 2023 Colorado and integrated the controls into the pickup's infotainment unit.

Hak Soo Ha also mentioned recently that Hyundai is still open to the possibility of developing a supercar, although it is not certain.
