India's longest Bogibeel rail-road bridge to open on Dec 25

The Bogibeel Bridge in the eastern part of Assam is scheduled to be inaugurated on December 25, 2018.

At 4.94 km, this rail-road bridge is the longest in India. It spans across the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra river and connects the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The foundation stone for the Bogibeel Bridge was laid in January 1997, while the construction work started in April 2002. Sixteen years after the construction began, the first freight train rolled over it on December 3, 2018.

The Bogibeel Bridge is part of a larger project planned to improve road and rail connectivity with the eastern most regions of India, which border China. The project also includes a trans-Arunachal highway that will follow the north bank of the Brahmaputra river, among other road and rail links.
