Mahindra re-registers Luna brand; could revive iconic moped

Mahindra Two Wheelers is reported to have registered the Luna and Luna TFR brands. While, there is no confirmation from the company, the step has led to speculation that the Luna brand could be revived.

Luna was a popular moped manufactured by Kinetic Engineering. Mahindra acquired Kinetic's two-wheeler business in 2008. While the Luna has been discontinued in the market for a while, Mahindra could reintroduce it the TVS-dominated moped segment. It is being speculated that Mahindra could use a 75 cc engine in the Luna instead of the old 50 cc motor. The moped could also be exported to other countries.

TVS managed to sell close to 65,000 units of the XL moped last month. No other big player has presence in this segment.
