Mahindra appears to be planning to launch the XUV500 with Intelli-Hybrid technology in the near future. This information was revealed through a circular that has been released by the Transport Department of the Delhi Government, giving registration approval to Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. for the XUV500 Intelli-Hybrid.

Intelli-Hybrid is Mahindra's mild-hybrid technology that was introduced with the Scorpio in July last year. It includes an automatic start/stop mechanism that switches the engine off if the vehicle is stationary for three seconds. It also uses a large capacity battery and a different starter motor which can be used to assist the engine in certain driving conditions, especially during acceleration. The Intelli-Hybrid system further uses regenerative braking to capture the energy lost during braking and use it to charge the car's batteries. Mahindra claims that this mild-hybrid system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7%.

According to the released circular, Mahindra will likely be offering the Intelli-Hybrid technology only on the FWD models of the XUV500. Being a mild-hybrid, the XUV will be sold with a concessional VAT of 5% for customers in Delhi. This can reduce its prices by around Rs. 1 lakh. However, since the SUV has a 2.2-litre diesel engine, Mahindra will need to pay an Environment Protection Charge of 1% on the car's ex-showroom price. This extra green cess was mandated last year by the Supreme Court after it revoked the ban on sales of diesel vehicles in Delhi & NCR.
