Maruti Celerio diesel to deliver nearly 30 km/l

Maruti kick started the AMT trend in India and garnered a strong response because of the transmission option. The Indian automaker is now looking to add to the model’s appeal with a new 800cc diesel engine. Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that the mill will deliver a fuel economy of nearly 30 km/l.

The oil burner has been developed by the brand’s parent company Suzuki, and will be used on the Celerio as well as an upcoming light commercial vehicle i.e. the Y9T. The company reportedly plans to start with an annual capacity of 1 lakh units for the small diesel engine and the mill is likely to make its way to other small cars in the company’s range as well.

Maruti has not confirmed if the diesel engine will come with the option of an AMT transmission as well, but given the popularity of the gearbox, the brand could offer it at a later stage if not initially.
