Maruti Suzuki has imported exactly 1,500 units of a 1.6-litre diesel engine from Italy during the period December 2014 - April 2015. This engine is expected to be used in the Across crossover that is likely to be launched in the coming months.

Last month, we reported that the Across was spotted in the company's factory wearing 1.6 and DDiS badges. However, the car also had an S-Cross badge, indicating that this engine could be used only on export models (the Across is known as the S-Cross in global markets). The 1.6-litre diesel engine produces about 120 BHP is expected to be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. It is unclear whether the 1.6-litre engine will make it to the India-spec version of the car. It is possible that for India, Maruti might use the same 1.3-litre, 90 BHP diesel unit and 5-speed gearbox that are found in the Ertiga and Ciaz. Suzuki's AllGrip all-wheel drive system might be seen on higher variants of the Across.

Images have shown the Across with a dual slat chrome grille, projector headlamps and daytime running lights and tail lights with chrome accents. To make it look rugged, it will sport a black cladding running along the lower portion of its bumpers and sides with silver skid plates.

On the inside, the Across is expected to get a black dashboard with silver inserts. Features such as a multi-function steering wheel, climate control and keyless entry and go are likely to be seen on higher variants.
