Mercedes supports anti-racism movement with all-black livery

Mercedes has unveiled an all-black livery for the 2020 Formula 1 season as a show of solidarity for the anti-racism movement.

Dubbed 'The Silver Arrows', the Mercedes F1 cars are usually finished in silver. But, this year, Mercedes has replaced the silver livery that was unveiled before preseason testing in February with this all-black theme. The company aims to send a message that it is committed to fighting racism and discrimination in all its forms.

The team has said that in the last five months, the Black Lives Matter protests across the world have highlighted the need to take action against all forms of discrimination. It plans to announce a diversity and inclusion programme. At present, 3% of its workforce belong to an ethnic minority, while 12% are women. The team's star driver and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton is F1's only Black driver.

After being delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 Formula 1 season is scheduled to kick-off on July 5, 2020. The season-opener will be held in Austria.
