MoRTH: Carmakers must offer biofuel vehicles in 6 months

Biofuel is a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways has stated that it will soon be mandatory for carmakers to offer vehicles running on biofuel.

The minister confirmed that the official notification regarding the order to make flex-fuel engines mandatory will be out within 6 months. State-run oil marketing companies will start offering biofuels at their existing petrol pumps.

Biofuel is a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels. It consists of bioethanol that can be produced from surplus crops like rice, maize, corn and sugarcane.

Of late, the government has started promoting biofuels, in order to reduce our dependence on crude oil imports. Besides being a cheaper alternative to petrol and diesel, biofuels would also benefit the farmers as they could divert surplus harvest for its production.
