My Ford Ecosport TDCi Gets A New Lease Of Life At 2.07 lakh km

My go to person for anything technical- BHPian dip27in told me that it is completely okay to overhaul a diesel engine and that he knows someone who does exactly the same

2.07 lakh km Update:

Baahon recently underwent a major overhaul of its engine. As I have mentioned in one of my earlier post, engine oil was seeping through and was getting burnt along with the fuel. Turned out, the engine oil was depleting pretty fast. Ford ASC in Calcutta promptly gave me the option of either replacing the entire engine block or go for an overhaul and the budget was roughly 1.5 lakhs to 2 lakhs. One more reputed FNG advised me to get rid of the car and buy a new one since according to them, overhauling a diesel engine is not advisable. Faced with a conundrum, I promptly turned to our technical man.

A look at the piston after it was taken out.
The thick layer of deposit was enough to make me cringe !!

My go to person for anything technical- BHPian dip27in told me that it is completely okay to overhaul a diesel engine and that he knows someone who does exactly the same. And that he will be monitoring the entire process too from his end.

This is the same guy who did my EGR cleaning as well and knows the vehicle. So basically, the list of parts was made one fine day since it was becoming increasingly difficult to drive the car with each passing day.

Engine Overhaul: Parts Required

1. Pistons and rings
2. Head Gasket
3. Valve seals
4. Crankshaft bearing
5. Inlet valve
6. Exhaust valve
7. Cylinder Head bolt
8. Conrod bearing
9. Engine Timing Belt
10. Lubes including Engine oil, Brake oil and Transmission Oil.
11. Coolant
14. AC gas refill and condenser oil.

Sourcing The Parts

Getting the parts was easy since I ordered the parts through the Ford Distributer in the Eastern Region. Got all the parts inside two days and it was really commendable. Specially appreciable was the fact that none of the parts that I ordered were routine and despite this, there was hardly any delay in getting the parts. Interesting part, most of the parts are imported from various countries of Europe and still costed reasonable.

Once the parts were obtained, the work on the engine started. It took an entire day to open the engine up part by part and the head was then taken to the shop which specialises in engine reconditioning only. Few more days it took to recondition the engine. The injectors were cleaned as well at their designated place.

So around the one week mark, one fine Sunday, everything was put together and voila, a completely new engine was now alive. The entire process of opening and closing the engine was closely monitored by the effable dip27in and I was just a mere spectator in the whole process.

While it was a painful sight to see Baahon getting its heart ripped out, it was equally a beautiful sight to see it roar back again from the slumber after the work was over. A sweet sounding engine back in its original form is pure bliss.

But one niggle still cropped up though. The fuel overflow hose/pipe got damaged in the process and had to be replaced. The damage came to light after few days when there was a leak suspected after some oil was found over the gearbox. It took me one day to get the part and another day to replace the one.

Back To Being New

So after all this hullabaloo, Baahon is back to its original self. Can’t thank BHPian dip27in enough for taking his time out in overseeing the work. It was his confidence that made the job of the overhaul easier and that too at a fraction of the cost that the ASC quoted me at the first place !!

Made a small trip to the hills and came back happy. Baahon is roaring to go again, let’s see when the next drive comes up. Current odometer reading stands at 2,07, 265 kms.
