National DigiLocker to carry your driving licence & RC book

The Transport and IT ministries are all set to roll out a cloud based document storage platform, named DigiLocker. Once this new platform is in place, users will not need to carry physical copies of their driving license and Registration Certificate. Instead soft copies of such documents can simply be uploaded and saved in the DigiLocker. The documents stored on the cloud via the app will then be available to the traffic police and other law enforcing agencies during spot checking and verification.

In order to open an account with the DigiLocker app, the user must have a valid Aadhaar card linked to his / her mobile number. During a police check, the user can simply show the documents on his mobile phone. The verifying official too will need to have the app to verify the soft copy's authenticity. Moreover, the app will also allow the official to add penalty points in case of a traffic violation.

The platform will be launched throughout India on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. With a vital personal information document like the Aadhaar card linked to the platform, it will be interesting to see how the Government ensures cyber security of this new app based system.
