New-gen SsangYong Rexton (Mahindra Y400) sketches revealed

The new-generation SsangYong Rexton is expected to be sold in India as a Mahindra SUV, which has internally been codenamed as the Y400. Official sketches of this upcoming model have now been revealed, ahead of its world premiere at the 2017 Seoul Motor Show next month.

The production-spec new-gen Rexton is expected to be based on the LIV-2 concept that was showcased at the Paris Motor Show last year. The sketches too indicate towards some borrowed cues from the concept, including the front grille and bumper layout. However, SsangYong will definitely tone down the overall styling of the concept to suit production requirements. Other visible elements in the released sketches include LED DRLs on the bumper, prominent character lines on the hood, some chrome detailing on the bumper & front grille and flared wheel arches.

The interiors adopt a relatively simpler layout, characterized by a touchscreen infotainment display in the center, which is flanked by vertical AC vents on both sides. Few faux wood inserts on the dashboard are also visible in the released teaser image.

Mahindra is expected to launch this SUV under its own brand name in India. The India-spec model will likely be powered by a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine with outputs rated at around 182 BHP and 420 Nm. Mahindra will also tweak the design a bit so that it is in accordance with the company's family design language. As a result, expect Mahindra's characteristic grille design on the India-bound model.

The Mahindra Y400 is expected to be launched in India sometime next year. It will be positioned above the XUV 500 and will compete against the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Hyundai Santa Fe.
