New Volkswagen Tiguan or Skoda Kodiaq to replace my VW Vento

I am also considering the Skoda Octavia and the Skoda Superb.

BHPian @PetrolheadASH recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hello Fellow BHP'ians,

While I hope that all of you are safe and healthy and enjoying the last day of what can only be termed as the most godforsaken year that we may have ever seen, I wish each and every one of you a blessed and healthy 2022.

Now to the meat of the matter. So I have an 8-year-old Vento AT and have had quite a number of experiences - good and bad with it. Suffice to say that my wallet cannot endure much more abuse as now things are starting to break down and it's time to let dear Helga go. Here are the cars are seen:

  • Skoda Octavia L&K: Loved the engine performance and overall ride. Looks marred by those god awful alloys and then there is the issue with everything on the touch screen (cars have become like video games now- miss the dials). Interiors are decent(ish). Price does not seem VFM as on-road in Delhi is about 35.
  • Skoda Superb L&K: The space is just amazing. The feel is absolutely spot on. Massage seats, ventilated seats and then it has rotary AC dials. So everything BUT the length is a deterrent- I drive myself and have been told that is mostly a chauffeur-driven car. So the Super is in holding position.
  • Volkswagen Tiguan: Was anxiously waiting for the Tiguan. It came and boy was I disappointed as to how VW shortchanged its customers in India. 40 lakhs and no ventilated seats, manual passenger seats? Then there is the heated steering (yes we need that in our 50-degree weather for sure). Clearly, someone at VW did not bring their A-game to work one day. Apart from these glaring examples of serious oversight (ignorance? By design? Default?), the Tiguan seemed to check most boxes. Still, it left me feeling rather disappointed. Seems that the Tiguan with such deficiencies is a destined failure as I'm sure people may have decided to wait for the Kodiaq.
  • Skoda Kodiaq: The new Kodiaq seems to be a minor facelift. The old one looked quite beefy and the L&K variant was quite well spec'ed out. Seems this may also be the case with the new one that is to be launched in January. Off late it seems that Skoda aces VW in its offerings and is touted to be the more premium of the two. Either way, the expectation is that Skoda will not make the same mistakes that VW made with the Tiguan. Now to wait and watch how Skoda prices the Kodiaq No pressure on Zac Hollis there.

So folks, calling all BHP'ians who resound with / are in the same boat. Let me know what all of y'all think.

Here's what BHPian Ojas had to say on the matter:

Since you didn't mention any preferences, I'll go by what I think of these cars.

If you want SUV practicality, the Kodiaq is a no brainer considering you didn't like the Tiguan. It's a much better product overall. I also assume you are OK with the bigger size and the fact that it's a 7 seater (which you may not need). I didn't test drive it, but from reviews, it seems to have car-like driving dynamics, but it may not handle as good as the Octavia or the Superb (but close I'd think).

If you don't want the Kodiaq for some reason, I recommend the Superb over the Octavia for the following reasons:

  • Sunroof
  • Ventilated seats
  • More space
  • Driving modes (although it doesn't change the suspension)
  • 360-degree camera
  • Looks and feels more premium overall
  • Ride/handling almost as good as Octavia (to my knowledge)

My needs are similar and I'm also considering a used 520d along with the options you mentioned.

I ruled out the A4 given it didn't have a premium sound system, but the car felt very special to me overall.
