Next-generation BMW 3-Series (G20) spied on test

The current generation BMW 3-Series (F30) underwent a facelift last year and it looks like BMW has already started developing the next generation of the car. Codenamed G20, the new 3-Series was spotted cold weather testing and given the recent introduction of the refreshed F30, the next generation 3-Series can be expected to make its debut in 2018.

The test mule is heavily camouflaged and is yet to get a lot of its production componentry. It terms of design, on the surface, it looks like an evolutionary redesign, and given what we have seen with the new 7-Series and spy images of the new 5-Series, it will most likely be exactly that.

The new 3-Series is expected to get larger dimensions and improved cabin space. While the car's footprint may get larger, it is also expected to get lighter. The car will adopt BMW's new lightweight 'CLAR' architecture that uses a combination of high-strength steel, carbon-fibre and aluminium. The new architecture also underpins new 7-Series and the next-generation 5-Series.

The new 3-Series is likely to get a range of 3, 4 and 6-cylinder engines, with a plug-in hybrid joining the range as well.
