Nio ET5 EV announced with 1000 km range

The Nio ET5 will be a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3.

Chinese carmaker, Nio, has announced its latest electric offering, the ET5. The new Nio ET5 comes with a compact-sedan silhouette, similar to that of its main rival, the Tesla Model 3. The ET5 is the brand's fifth model after the EC5, ES6, ES8 and ET7 luxury sedan.

The Nio ET5 is underpinned by the same Technology Platform 2.0 as the ET7. The electric car is offered exclusively with a dual-motor setup; one at each axle - producing a combined total of 483 BHP and 700 Nm. The ET5 will be offered with a choice of three battery sizes: a 75 kWh unit offering 550 km of range, a long-range 100 kWh battery with a claimed range of 700 km and the top-spec Ultralong Range 150 kWh battery offering 1000 km on a single charge.

However, the claimed range of the Nio ET5 is said to be homologated according to China's CLTC cycle and not the standard WLTP cycle.

The Nio ET5 will go on sale in the Chinese market by the end-2022, before being introduced in Europe sometime in 2023. The ET5 is said to be priced equivalent to GBP 38,935 in China, making it slightly more affordable than the Tesla Model 3.
