Passenger airbags to be made mandatory

The timeline for the implementation of the new norms is yet to be announced.

According to a media report, the government plans to make passenger side airbags mandatory for all cars, including the economy models.

The technical committee on vehicle standards has accepted the proposal and the government has issued a draft notification to amend the automotive industry standard (AIS). The timeline for the implementation of the new norms is yet to be announced.

Driver side airbags were made mandatory for all cars from July 1, 2019. All cars are also required to have safety features like speed alert, reverse parking sensors and seat-belt reminder.

As part of the amendment, the government has also proposed to ban child lock systems on all four-wheelers used for commercial purposes.
