Rally ace Gaurav Gill wins the 2019 Arjuna Award

Ace Rally driver Gaurav Gill has become the first motorsport athlete to win the Arjuna Award. The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, presented the award to him.

Gaurav Gill has six Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) titles under his belt. He has won the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) in 2013, 2016 and 2017. Among other international appearances, Gill has also represented India in the World Rally Championship 2 (WRC2). This year, he is likely to compete in Rally Turkey, Wales Rally GB and Rally Australia. 

Arjuna Awards are given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to recognize achievements in sports. 19 athletes were nominated for the award in 2019, including cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, Chinglensana Singh Kangujam for hockey, Ajay Thakur for kabaddi, Swapna Burman for athletics and Pooja Dhanda for wrestling.
