Renault India plans to introduce strong-hybrid powertrains

Renault's E-Tech hybrid powertrain is said to deliver a fuel economy of 24 km/l.

Renault has announced that it plans to introduce strong-hybrid powertrains in India. The carmaker is also looking to localize its power units to remain competitive.

Renault currently offers its E-Tech range of hybrid engines in the international market. These use technology developed under Renault's Formula 1 program.

Renault's E-Tech range uses both series and parallel architecture, featuring two electric motors and includes 143 BHP and 158 BHP powertrains. The former comes with a 93 BHP 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder engine, paired with a 48 BHP electric motor and 24 BHP high-voltage starter generator.

The E-Tech hybrid system uses a 1.2 kWh battery pack as energy storage. Renault claims that it can deliver 24 km/l under normal driving conditions. The 158 BHP version gets a larger 9.8 kWh battery pack.

Renault is also considering plug-in hybrids, pure electric powertrains along with conventional naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engines in India.
