Replacement for WagonR: Honda City or Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

We have a WagonR LXI 2008 which we will replace next year July as it will run out of registration.

BHPian 911CarreraS recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Greetings to all TeamBHP members, I need your level headed advice as I am in a big dilemma. I am a 4th year engineering student, We have a WagonR LXI 2008 which we will replace next year July as it will run out of registration. So right now we have two choices:

  • Buy a Honda City ZX CVT this month and replace the WagonR with a Grand i10 Nios CNG next July.
  • Buy the i10 Nios CNG now and get the Honda City next year in July.

Actually I am in my last working semester and the car won't be used as much next year probably if I don't do my Masters. Also we are trying to buy a new house this year, and maybe if I hold out for Honda City till next year, then maybe it will help the cause.

The real reason is that I believe I really do not deserve such an expensive 16 lakh car as I have not yet achieved anything in my life and I feel I am being too much of a burden on my parents. They are okay with the car and don't really have an issue, but I have this inherent middle class guilt that is it worth spending so much on a car?

My fellow Team BHP members are much more experienced than me, I am sure you guys must have gone through the same situation once in your life. You guys are much more older than me. Do you think I am overthinking or should I take the plunge? Please guide me for the same.

Regards,

Here's what BHPian abhikb had to say on the matter:

Your thoughts are at the right place at the moment, get your parents blessings and replace the WagonR with a i10 nios, saying no for a Honda city will be the a graduation gift for them.

Here's what BHPian shancz had to say on the matter:

A senior had advised me in my first year of college that "whatever you want to do, do it with your money not your Dad's" and he wasn't even talking about automobiles.

Practiced it in spirit and I don't think I would've been happier the other way around.

Your thoughts are in the right place. Check out this thread.

From what I gather the latest cars are also performing better than others and with lesser bootspace intrusion.

The Nios seems good, the Celerio is the latest from MSIL and the Tiago being the latest entrant delivers an all round package with better safety and dynamics than others.

IMO. test drive all three before taking a call, check out GTO's reply too.

Good luck.

Here's what BHPian Tgo had to say on the matter:

Buy i10 NIOS CNG now and the Honda City probably might not be in the market next year.

Who knows, saving some money now goes into funding your education which enables you to skip a segment or two altogether.

I never needed a car/bike/auto in college. I lived on campus, ate in the mess and walked across the small town of Manipal as I knew my parents were spending out of their means to get me the education I wanted.

I don’t know about living in a city while in college and how access to a car works out. But I can imagine it to be a necessity to save time in some way or the other.
