Route update: Bangalore to Goa via Davangere and Honavar

The roads were decent with the occasional potholes here and there. There were nice forest stretches, and rural area stretches weaving through villages.

We did the return journey to Goa via Davangere - Sharavati - Honavar. A few details are below.

Day 1

Plan was to leave Bangalore at 1400hrs to reach Davangere at 1800hrs. We did a pencil booking at a decent accommodation, Davangere Heritage on the highway. Ample parking space covered by CCTV, with Kamat at the ground floor for the usual veg fanfare.

Day 2

Plan was to leave Davangere at 0900hrs to reach JLR Sharavati at 1230hrs. We drove via Halageri – Kod – Shiralakoppa – Soraba – Siddapur. Roads were decent, with the occasional potholes here and there, nice forest stretches, and rural area stretches weaving through villages as well. JLR Sharavati is an awesome property, quaint and scenic overlooking the Talakalale reservoir. The hospitality included a boat ride in the reservoir, pedal boating, canoeing and a trip to Jog Falls.

Day 3

Plan was to leave JLR Sharavati at 1100hrs to reach Panaji at 1700hrs. We drove via Honavar – Karwar. The 60km stretch from Sharavati to Honavar is an excellent forest/ghat drive with ascents and descents, any rider/driver’s delight to drive on! The next stretch from Honavar to Canacona by-pass is a breeze, with the occasional unfinished highway section in some areas. Google Maps tends to divert you through Kadra, though the new bridge over Kali is now used for two-way traffic. Be aware of this. There’s a new spot for a coffee, snacks and a bio break post Sadashivagad on the left.

Now the stretch from Canacona to Margao can really test your nerves, lots of trucks, gas tankers and trailers tend to keep traffic in a single file. This 40km undivided 2 lane stretch can take close to an hour in the peak hours, though the tarmac is of great condition.

Overall Bangalore to Panaji via Jog & Honavar was 660km/13.5hrs, 95km more than Bangalore to Panaji via Anmod which I usually do in about 10.5hrs.
