Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Took the Bangalore - MK Hubli - Khanapur - Jamboti - Chorla ghat route while going to Goa. The entire ghat road is in shambles. Avoid Chorla if you are driving a low GC car.

On the way back tried the Tilari Ghat route from North Goa to Bangalore as per Google map suggestion. The ghat road was very good and scenic. Glad that I took this route. Only the road between Tilari and Belgavi was a bit bad. But was acceptable.

Thanks for the update. What car were you driving? How bad is Chorla Ghat road? Were there any rains on the ghat?

I was driving Jimny. There was no heavy rain. Just some drizzle now and then. The entire stretch had lot of rough patches and pot holes. Any car can navigate, but have to slow down depending on the size of pot holes. I could see some sedans like Verna struggling. There were no diversions or road works as such.

Please make sure to carry PUC for the car. Goa cops check this and seat belt particularly right from border.

How did Jimny perform on such bad roads? I understand, when you mentioned that some sedans like Verna struggled on these bad patches. Jimny should have fared much better as it's purpose built to navigate such roads or did it had any difficulty too in traversing bad roads? Again, thanks for the update.

Jimny was able to sail through the pot holed roads without any worries Didn't have to slowdown like other cars. Complete peace of mind.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

I traveled from Chennai to Assonora Club Mahindra, Goa, on October 30th. For the onward journey, I took the Chennai-Hosur-Nice Ring Road-Tumkur-Hubli-Dharwad route. After Dharwad, there are two options: one via Ramnagar and Anmod Ghat, and the other via MK Hubli-Khanapur-Chorla Ghat. I strongly advise against the MK Hubli-Khanapur-Chorla route, as it's mostly damaged and isolated—something I regretted on my onward trip.

For the return journey, I took the Assonora-Molem-Ramnagar-Dharwad-Hubli route, which was generally smooth, with only a few diversions and rough patches due to bridge work. This route is straightforward, popular, and the best choice for travelers from both Bangalore and Chennai, for both onward and return journeys.

I traveled in a Hyundai Alcazar. For refreshments, I recommend stopping at Big Mishra Pedha in Dharwad and Hotel Surabhi in Ramnagar.

One point I missed updating in my earlier post here, there was speed check soon after crossing Mollem checkpost while driving in to Goa.

The interceptor was located around here . This is section is a regular point for speed check, nothing new as such.

Speed limit is a cool 60kmph

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

I am a sedate driver. 60 kmpl max in single lane highways and 95 max in 3 lane highways. I also use cruise control when possible.

Just did Bangalore goa via 2 different routes:

Route 1:

Bengaluru - Hubli - Yellapur - Karwar - Canacona
maps onward

3 lane till hubli, single lane good tarmac till yellapur, some potholes and broken tarmac till ankola and back to good roads from ankola to goa

Time taken 12.5 hours with about 1 hour breaks

Return:

old goa - ponda - mollem - anmod - haliyal - dharwar - hubli - bangalore

maps-return

good roads till goa border, cemented anmod ghat till anmod, then diversion via tinai ghat is very bad, horrible till castlerock and slightly better from castlerock to ramnagar, then i missed a turn and missed ramnagar/londa and landed in haliyal, road from anmod to haliyal is very bad - potholes, broken tarmac etc but very scenic through the forests, haliyal to dharwad is good, and then back on hubli to bangalore highway.

But if make sure to not make the same mistake I did then the road is bad only from anmod to ramnagar.

Time taken 12.5 hours with about 1 hour breaks

to note:

the times are similar but the 2nd route is shorter, much worse roads.

Chorla ghat is still bad and is a much longer route until the road is completely open from anmod village to ramnagar i would recommend the karwar route especially if going to south goa.

The main road from Anmod to Ramnagar is open. Google Maps has the tendency to route you via Castle Rock from time to time. Apart from a few stretches which are under construction, the Anmod to Ramnagar stretch is quite good.

Going in December again. Will try this out. Thanks.

I only decided to take the tinai ghat via castle Rock because I saw buses and trucks coming out of that road.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hello everyone,

we are travelling to South Goa in December. This time planning to break the journey instead of going in a single stretch. We found a homestay (which seems decent) in Ramnagar and then we leave for Goa the next day.

Does this route/plan make sense from the road conditions POV?

On day 1 we will have to take Bangalore-Hubli-Dharwad-Ramnagar

Day 2 Anmod-Ponda-Betalbatim

From what I understand we no longer have to go via the CastleRock route.

Couple of questions:

1. why the break in journey? unless you absolutely have to or you want to spend some time in the forest, its not a good idea.

2. Since betalbatim is in south goa I would still recommend going via blr- hubli- kalghatgi- yellapur - ankola - betalbatim
Also note that till hubli the road is fast and you can make it in 5-6 hours. you can also have a stopover in huble or dharwad

In the section on highway 748 between Ramnagar and Doodhsagar Jungle Resort, google maps will say road is broken.

It will give an alternate route to 748.

Do not ignore that warning:

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

We did the return journey to Goa via Davangere - Sharavati - Honavar. A few details below.

Day 1 plan was to leave Bangalore at 1400hrs to reach Davangere at 1800hrs. We did a pencil booking at a decent accommodation, Davangere Heritage on the highway. Ample parking space covered by CCTV, with Kamat at the ground floor for the usual veg fanfare.
Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries-dh.jpeg

Day 2 plan was to leave Davangere at 0900hrs to reach JLR Sharavati at 1230hrs. We drove via Halageri – Kod – Shiralakoppa – Soraba – Siddapur. Roads were decent, with the occasional potholes here and there, nice forest stretches, rural area stretches weaving through villages as well. JLR Sharavati is an awesome property, quaint and scenic overlooking the Talakalale reservoir. The hospitality included a boat ride in the reservoir, pedal boating, canoeing and a trip to Jog falls.
Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries-jlr-sharavati.jpeg

Day 3 plan was to leave JLR Sharavati at 1100hrs to reach Panaji at 1700hrs. We drove via Honavar – Karwar. The 60km stretch from Sharavati to Honavar is an excellent forest/ghat drive with ascents and descents, any rider/driver’s delight to drive on! The next stretch from Honavar to Canacona bye pass is a breeze, with the occasional unfinished highway section in some areas. Google maps tends to divert you through Kadra, though the new bridge over Kali is now used for two way traffic. Be aware of this. There’s a new spot for a coffee, snacks and a bio break post Sadashivagad on the left.
Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries-coffe-stop-sadashivgad.jpeg

Now the stretch from Canacona to Margao can really test your nerves, lots of trucks, gas tankers and trailers tend to keep traffic in a single file. This 40km undivided 2 lane stretch can take close to an hour in the peak hours, though the tarmac is of great condition.

Overall Bangalore to Panaji via Jog & Honavar was 660km/13.5hrs, 95km more than Bangalore to Panaji via Anmod which I Usually do in about 10.5hrs.

Ok Based on your suggestion, we have decided to change our route to Blr-Yellapur->ankola->Karwar->Betalbatim.

Now google maps is confusing me on this route. Sometimes from Karwar to Goa it shows the straight route via the bridge on River Kali. But some other times it shows the entire circular route from Karwar -> Kadra and then back to Sadashivgad and then Goa. Not sure why. Is there some work going on on the bridge? Anyone has any idea about the Karwar->Goa route right now
