Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hello folks! Wanted some advice on the Bangalore to Goa (Morjhim) route.

Google maps shows route Bengaluru(HSR)-Hubbali - Khanapur-Chorla-Morjhim whereas I am inclined to take the slightly longer (but, I would think more peaceful)Bengaluru(HSR)-Belgavi-Chorla-Morjhim route.

The time shown for both is quite similar and distance difference is about 15kms.

Any latest update / reviews /news on the Hubbali-Khanapur-Chorla stretch? I drive a fairly high SUV but would want to avoid non tarmac roads along the way.

TIA

You are absolutely right. The Bengaluru - Belagavi - Chorla - Morjim route is way better than the Khanapur route.

Google maps shows the shortest route and possibly not the best route.

The Khanapur to Chorla road is an extremely narrow single road. Any 4/6 wheeler vehicle in the opposite direction, both vehicles have to get off the road to pass. Now you get the idea, how narrow it is.

On the other hand, the Belagavi route is much relaxed, wider and quicker too.

So, follow your instincts and take the Belagavi - Chorla - Morjim route.

Thank you very much for the confirmation. Any restaurant suggestions along the route? Will be travelling with family(including a toddler) so safety and cleanliness would be paramount.

Apoorva resorts, Davanagere is a good place since you’re with family, food may not be that great, but worth it for the cleanliness and rest rooms especially since you’re travelling with family.

Thanks @NPV, Apoorva resorts is a standard stop for breakfast on this route everytime for us. The Benne Doses are just yum. If its too early (e.g. going to Mumbai / Pune), the breakfast option is Ganesh hotel before Hubbali.

I was actually looking for lunch recommendations from Belgavi to Goa.

Unfortunately there isn't anything worth mentioning between Belagavi and Goa.

The only place where you can have something to eat is at Jamboti (between Belagavi and Goa) and they are just a couple of road side eateries, not exactly hygienic..

So, the options are, either you have your lunch at Belagavi or at Goa after you arrive here as there's nothing worthwhile inbetween.

In Belagavi, Sankam Residency had a good restaurant where I’ve tried the buffet breakfast, it was very good. Just off the highway, no major detour needed.

Another option could be the Fairfield Marriott which is on the other side of the highway but accessible from the service roads via a U turn.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

For those taking the Anmod route, are there still folks extorting money just at the start of Anmod ghat on the Karnataka side?

I've noticed busses and trucks simply ignore these guys and only private cars meekly paying. Also what is the amount demanded? I usually just drive through without even rolling my window down.

Bangalore - Goa Route Update :

Recently completed this trip.
Distance Covered - 652kms. Time taken - 12 hours (Door to door).
Two food stops and one fuel stop totaling about 2 hours.

A short breakdown of the route taken -

1. Bangalore to Sira - Stop 1 at A2B for breakfast. Had planned for Apoorva Resorts Davangere but ended up leaving late which led to hunger creeping in early and we stopped at A2B along the route. Standard, decent quality food with neat washrooms.

2. Sira to Belgaum - Stop 2 at Mcdonalds, Belgaum. Late lunch stop. This McD is at Khanapur Road and does not require any detour. Proud of my family who sat peacefully for the 4 hours run from Sira to Belgaum.

3. Belgaum to Goa via Chorla ghat - Lovely scenic route with well tarred roads. Certain 2-3 100m stretches were broken but overall much nicer than the Anmod route.

A few points to note -

1. Roads are mostly good throughout the route. The dreaded single lane between Hubbali and Dharwad is still a royal pain and a little more but there are a couple of 4 lane stretches of 300-400m in between which show how much more peaceful it will be once completed

2. Speed limit is 100km/hr throughout (except of course, the ghats and the single road). There are a few spaces which mention 80km/hr (older boards) but the limit is 100km/hr. I talked to a cop in Sira who mentioned the same. Speed cameras are present enroute but did not find any mobile speed guns

3. Crossing Belgaum will be slow speed but quick overall. Keep patience. City seems laid back with a relaxed driving style. Or maybe I did not encounter the crazies on a lazy, hot Saturday afternoon.

4. The craziness does start once you cross Belgaum towards Goa, usual suspects being the yellow number plates and the locals. I kept a steady speed between 35-50km/hr and covered the 120kms between Belgaum and Morjhim in 3 hours.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

My friend will be driving to Ponda, Goa from Bangalore on 01-MAR.
Starting time is around 10.30/11.00am.
The google maps shows the route via Hubli-Anmod ghat.
Is this the best available route?
Could anyone who recently travelled to Goa from Bangalore on this route, give updates please?

Yes. Hubli - Anmod - Ponda is the best route for your friend traveling to Ponda. It's the shortest route from Bangalore to Ponda, Goa.

It's reported here that a small section of Anmod ghat road is in bad shape. Other than that, the route is fine.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

My brother in law is coming to Bangalore in an old Estilo car on Saturday, starting from Madgaon. Since I have not taken Anmod route recently, not sure if I could recommend the same to him.
Reading a few older posts here say Anmod is bad, but how bad is it for old super compact car like Maruti Estilo? And it will be loaded sagging down further.
Please help here else I will recommend him the Karwar, Ankola, Yellapur, Hubli, Bangalore route, longer indeed but less risky for low GC vehicles.
Any suggestions please.

I missed the point that your BIL is coming to Bangalore from Quepem with a fully loaded Estilo. In the DM, I had suggested the Anmod route thinking your BIL is starting from Ponda. I misread, My bad and apologies.

As your BIL is starting from Quepem, he can take the Karwar - Ankola - Yellapur road. From Quepem, he can join the NH at Balli and then it is Canacona - Karwar - Ankola - Yellapur. The road is excellent and wouldnt pose any issue for a heavily loaded car with low GC.

Also please note that the difference in kms between Anmod and Karwar route is very little. Via Anmod the distance is 573 Kms while via Karwar it is 590 Kms. A difference of 17 Kms which is miniscule. Further the road on Karwar is fabulous, negating any difference in the distance between the two routes

No worries, I have already suggested him to take the route you mentioned. Actually that is my usual route now a days due to unpredictable nature of Anmod ghat. I was uncertain about Anmod but to be honest that used to be my favorite route for years.

Follow up query from my friend.
Gmaps is showing two routes from Hubli to Ponda.

Any suggestion on which one to take?
