Route update: Bangalore to Udupi and back via 2 different routes

I was driving a Mahindra XUV500 and my max speed was 20 km/h. Cars with low ground clearance have to be very careful.

BHPian Fauji recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Just came back from Udupi. Here are route updates:

  • Bangalore - Sakleshpur - The road is a breeze till Hassan. Hassan bypass till you exit town is chaos. Bad road and congested.
  • Hassan exit till Sakleshpur bypass - Very good.
  • Sakleshpur bypass till Heggadde a distance of 15 km is a mess. I was driving XUV 500 and my max speed was 20KMPH. Low GC cars have to be very careful.
  • Heggadde onwards till the start of Shiradi is not bad but not great too.
  • Shiradi Ghat is a breeze.
  • We took a detour to Subramanya and the road from Gundya is excellent.
  • The road from Subramanya to Uppinangady is excellent too.
  • We then thought of having a sip of K Tea at Kalladka and then going to Udupi and this is when the misery started.
  • The roads from Uppinangady till the Bantwal toll booth are a mess with flyovers and diversions.
  • Bantwal till Udupi is great. Except for traffic barriers at multiple places.
  • On return, we came via Baindur - Kollur - Tirthahalli - Shivamogga - Chitradurga as we had some work in Baindur.
  • The road throughout is excellent, we had the best drive.
  • Surprised at Baindur - Nagara - Thirthahalli stretch. Excellent.

Moral of the story

The best route to Udupi is via Chitradurga - Shivamogga - Thirthahalli - Agumbe ghat.

If you are travelling to Kundapur or other places you can go via Shivamogga - Hosanagara.
