RTOs could be scrapped soon; more modern system coming

The Government of India is said to be in the process of bringing about a law that will result in the scrapping of Regional Transport Offices (RTO). As a replacement, new system is expected to be adopted in the coming months.

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highway has said that under the new system, which will employ modern technology, violators of traffic rules will be served notices at their doorsteps. If a violator chooses to challenge the notice in a court of law and loses the case, he will be liable to pay three times the fine set for the offence.

With the new system, the Government will try to bring down the alleged harassment of citizens at RTOs. The Minister also said that the government was preparing a plan to improve traffic in urban areas with the help of the traffic models in the UK and other countries.
