Rumour: Ferrari 488 Speciale to debut in March 2018

According to documents filed at the California Air Resources Board (CARB), Ferrari is likely to introduce a limited edition 'Speciale' variant of the mid-engined 488 GTB sports car. The car is expected to get lighter components as well as a retuned engine.

The Ferrari 488 Speciale is expected to be powered by the same 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that does duty in the regular 488, but with increased power and torque outputs. In the standard car, the engine makes 661 BHP and 760 Nm of torque. The same 7-speed dual clutch transmission from the 488 is expected to be used. However, it could get reworked internals to handle the increase in power.

Camouflaged test mules of the limited edition Ferrari 488 had been spotted on a race track last month. The photos reveal that the car gets revised front and rear bumpers, reworked air intakes on the sides and what looks like an air vent on the bonnet. The spy images also reveal that the car gets identical headlights to the regular Ferrari 488.

According to the CARB documents, the Speciale is listed as '488 Special Series Coupe'. It must be noted that Ferrari has used the special series identification for cars like the LaFerrari and the 458 Speciale. This suggests that the unveiling of the car is nearing and Ferrari could showcase the model at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
