Rumour: Maruti WagonR EV cancelled

Maruti has been testing prototypes of the electric WagonR since 2018.

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki seems to have called off the project involving the WagonR EV.

Back in 2018, Maruti began testing 50 prototypes of the WagonR EV and the test mules have been spotted across the country. The cars were said to be powered by a 72 V electric drive connected to a 10-25 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The WagonR EV was scheduled to be launched in 2020, but was delayed. Toyota was also supposed to launch an electric car based on Maruti's vehicle.

Although there has been no official word from Maruti, it has been said that the project was dropped citing techno-commercial viability reasons. The rising input costs could have also led to the termination of the project.
