Skoda-VW developing a CMP-based EV platform for India

The VW Group was evaluating a localized version of the MEB21G platform for India.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India had been scouting for partners to develop future EVs for India. It even had extensive discussions with Mahindra over a deal that could’ve helped both carmakers share development costs. However, with the talks failing to reach a consensus, the German automaker has decided to develop its own India-specific EV platform.

According to media reports, Skoda Auto VW India is working on the India Main Platform (IMP). It is said to be a heavily localized derivative of the China Main Platform (CMP), which will underpin four electric SUVs – two each under the Skoda and VW brands.

Earlier, the VW Group was evaluating a localized version of the MEB21G platform for India. However, it was deemed unfeasible.

As far as its ICE range is concerned, Skoda Auto VW India’s future products like the next-gen Kushaq, Taigun, Slavia and Virtus will be based on the MQB A037 architecture. It is not only bigger than the current MQB A0IN platform but also supports Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) features and is compatible with hybrid powertrains.
