Speed governors will no longer be mandatory for CVs

Earlier, the government of India had made speed governors mandatory for commercial vehicles (CV) following an order passed by the Karnataka High Court. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has now said that speed governors will no longer be compulsory for CVs.

The government will have to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to abolish speed governors but hasn't announced a specific timeline for the same. Until then, all commercial vehicles will have to adhere to the existing speed limits.

In a bid to improve road safety, the government has already made safety features likes ABS, dual front airbags and reverse parking sensors compulsory for vehicles manufactured from 2019. Manufacturers will also have to provide features like beeping speed reminder and seat belt warning.
