Tamil Nadu highways to get speed cameras & vehicle tracking

Tamil Nadu is setting up speed enforcement and vehicle tracking devices on its highways. The system will be setup on three highway stretches - Poonamallee-Vellore, Madurai-Villupuram and Salem-Krishnagiri at an estimated cost of Rs. 98 crore. It will be operational in 2 months.

The vehicle tracking and speed enforcement system has been developed by Kerala State Electronic Development Corporation Limited (KELTRON). The system comprises of three main components - speed enforcement system, control centre and interception management system.

The speed enforcement system uses roadside sensors, speed cameras and an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera to detect speed violators and record the vehicle number. Tracking Doppler radar detects vehicles travelling above the speed limit, which triggers the cameras. The images are then sent to a control room where an e-challan is generated in the name of the vehicle owner.

The system can also record average speeds of vehicles plying on the highway. A live geographic information system (GIS)-based map of the three highway stretches will be available at the command centre, which will help track any desired vehicle. The system will also highlight repeat offenders.

Besides this, the government plans to setup sensor-based traffic signals, blinkers warning drivers of a junction and high mast lights for better visibility at night.
