TVS & Bajaj settle patent dispute after 12 years

According to a media report, the patent dispute between TVS and Bajaj Auto over the use of two spark plugs in an engine has been settled after 12 years. Both companies are said to have agreed to withdraw the pending proceedings.

Back in September 2007, Bajaj had accused TVS of copying its twin-spark plug technology for the 125cc engine powering the Flame motorcycle. Following this, TVS filed a defamation suit against Bajaj claiming Rs. 250 crore in damages. Cases were also filed in various courts and at intellectual property appellate boards.

In response to Bajaj, TVS had claimed that its engine did not violate any patents. The engine was developed along with AVL, Austria. It had three valves, while the Bajaj engine had a two valve design.
