Volvo to give proper names to its next-gen model line-up

Volvo first introduced the alpha-numeric nomenclature on its cars back in 1995.

Volvo cars will soon come with proper phonetic names, instead of the current alpha-numeric designations such as XC90, C40 and S60.

According to a media report, Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo has confirmed that all future models in the brand's line-up will receive proper names, diverging from the current nomenclature. He also stated that the production version of the Volvo Concept Recharge - the successor to the XC90, will be among the first models to get a proper phonetic name.

The Volvo Concept Recharge comes with a completely new architecture, new design and is pure-electric - marking a new beginning for the Swedish brand. This makes it the perfect time for the brand to move away from the "engineering-type" names and introduce a new nomenclature as well. Samuelsson, however, stated that the name for the XC90 successor hasn't been finalised.

Volvo first introduced the alpha-numeric nomenclature on its cars back in 1995. The brand adopted 'S' for saloons, 'V' for estates, 'C' for hatchbacks & coupes and 'XC' for SUVs - while the numbers were based on the sizes of the models.
