Rumour: New Maruti Alto K10 to be launched in Jan 2015

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), India's largest passenger car manufacturer in terms of sales, is rumoured to be considering launching an all-new Alto K10 hatchback in January 2015.

A report by Financial Express claims that the new Alto will borrow design cues from the recently launched Celerio hatchback. The new car will also get revamped interiors which will be more spacious than those of the current model.

The new Alto K10 is expected to continue with the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, 68 PS engine and 5-speed manual gearbox that is used in the current model. However, the report also says that the new car is also likely to get an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). The AMT-equipped Celerio has been a big hit among Indian buyers since it is said to offer a stress-free driving experience in heavy traffic conditions.

The new K10 will be pitted against the Datsun GO and the Hyundai Eon 1.0, which was launched yesterday.

Scoop: Maruti Alto K10 facelift snapped

Maruti Suzuki is in the process of giving the Alto K10 hatchback a facelift. Motoring website Motorbash has published pictures of the car which were taken while it was being tested.

While they do not reveal much, the pictures suggest that the facelifted Alto K10 will borrow design cues from the larger Celerio as well as the Alto 800. The car gets larger, swept-back headlamps, new grille with a chrome strip at the top, new front bumper with air dam and fog lamp housings and a rounded bonnet. The facelifted K10 also appears to be taller than the current model.

Maruti is expected to use the same 998 cc, 3-cylinder engine as the current model to power the facelifted Alto K10. Tuned to produce 68 PS and 90 Nm of torque, this engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. A variant with Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) is likely to be launched as well.

This is the first major change that the Alto K10 will be receiving since its launch in 2010. Details regarding the launch of the car are awaited.

Maruti to launch Alto K10 with AMT by year end

India's largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is planning to launch the Alto K10 hatchback with an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). Financial Express reports that the car is likely to be introduced into the market by the end of the year.

The Alto, which is MSIL's highest seller, has seen a drop of 3% in its sales during the April 2013-January 2014 period. MSIL hopes that the addition of the AMT variant will prop up the car's sales.

MSIL launched the Celerio, which is India's cheapest automatic car, at the 12th Auto Expo, which was held in February 2014. The demand for the car has been very strong and the AMT variant has outsold the manual. This has prompted the company to consider endowing its other products with AMT.

The AMT is built by Italian auto component manufacturer, Magneti Marelli. It is expected to make driving the car considerably easier than a manual gearbox, especially in heavy traffic. A driver can use it like a conventional automatic or shift gears manually in a sequential pattern. The technology is cheaper than an automatic transmission, which helps to keep the price of the car relatively low.
