F1: Lewis Hamilton wins Austrian GP

Mercedes F1 driver, Lewis Hamilton has managed to clinch the Austrian GP title after a dramatic last lap collision with teammate Nico Rosberg. This win has helped Hamilton to narrow down Rosberg's championship lead to just 11 points.

The Austrian GP started with Hamilton at pole position, after he managed to clock brilliant times in Saturday's damp conditions. Rosberg was to take the second position at start, but was demoted to sixth on the grid after suffering a gearbox penalty.

While Hamilton led the race comfortably for the first 21 laps, Rosberg continued to close the gap by overtaking Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and McLaren's Jenson Button. As a result, Rosberg managed to promote himself from sixth at the grid to third by lap 10, and was behind Hamilton and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen. Minor issues with Hamilton's left rear wheel during his first pit stop on lap 21 made him emerge out of the pits behind Rosberg.

In the last lap after a fast exit on turn 1, Hamilton was able to secure a safe outside line on turn 2, but somehow Rosberg decided to turn in very late into the corner. This held Hamilton out wide, delaying his turn. When Hamilton did decided to turn-in, Rosberg was still going on with his straight front wheels, which resulted in a collision between the two Mercedes cars.

Hamilton was pushed off the track, but it was Rosberg's car that had taken the brunt of the brash. The front wing got damaged, that slowed him down. Meanwhile, Hamilton was able to pass his teammate to win the Austrian GP for Mercedes. Rosberg further lost two places (and a podium finish) when Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen overtook him, to secure the second and third position on the podium, respectively. Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth followed by Jenson Button. Romain Grosjean in his Haas F1 car finished seventh followed by Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz. Valtteri Bottas in his Williams car and Pascal Wehrlein with Manor racing completed the top 10 list.

One other major incident in the Austrian GP involved Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who suffered a tyre blowout on lap 27.

After the Austrian GP, the world championship rank table is as follows:
1. Nico Rosberg - 153
2. Lewis Hamilton - 142
3. Sebastian Vettel - 96

Austrian GP: Rosberg wins it for Mercedes

Nico Rosberg snatched the chequered flag this weekend, as the Mercedes driver managed to hold a strong lead, even though Lewis Hamilton started from pole position. The opening lap also saw a major crash, which dented Hamilton's offensive to get back ahead. Fernando Alonso’s McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari made contact, causing both cars to crash into the outer wall. The Mclaren went on climbed onto the Ferrari, with Alonso's rear tyre almost driving over the ice-man's head.

Felipe Massa placed 3rd, with Sebastian Vettel clinching 4th place with the one Ferrari that remained. Vettel lost time getting a wheel changed during a pit stop and the delay was enough for Ferrari to lose another opportunity to reach the podium - despite the German putting up a great fight.

Valtteri Bottas drove his Williams into 5th place with Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez placing 6th and 9th respectively. Lotus’s Pastor Maldonado and Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen were engaged in an intense fight for 7th place, with Maldonado almost crashing in an attempt to get ahead. Maldonado managed to come out on top with Verstappen placing 8th.

Daniel Ricciardo rounded off the top ten with the Red Bull taking 1 point from the race.
