Production-spec Kia EV5 revealed; specs & variants

The EV5 has a rear seat that can be folded flat and transformed into a bed.

Kia showcased a range of electric SUVs at the inaugural 'Kia EV Day' event. The line-up included the production-spec EV5.

The Kia EV5 is based on the E-GMP platform, with styling inspired by the larger EV9. The car has a futuristic design with boxy proportions. The rear-hinged doors seen on the concept have been replaced with conventional ones.

The EV5 has a rear seat that can be folded flat and transformed into a bed. The electric SUV also gets a 4.1-litre refrigerator, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 5-inch climate control display.

The Kia EV5 will be available in three variants: standard, long-range and long-range AWD. The base trim uses a 215 BHP electric motor powered by a 64 kWh battery. It has a claimed range of 530 km (CLTC cycle).

The long-range variant uses the same motor but gets a larger battery pack. The 88 kWh battery is said to deliver a range of 720 km. The AWD variant has a dual motor setup paired with an 88 kWh battery. It can cover 650 km on a single charge.

Kia to set up an EV production hub in India

Kia also plans to set up exclusive showrooms for its EV line-up in India.

Kia has announced that it will be setting up an EV production facility in India. This new factory will not only serve the domestic market but also be a production hub for emerging markets across the world.

The announcement was made during the inaugural 'Kia EV Day'. "Strategically designed EV models tailored for emerging markets will be produced in India," the carmaker said.

A total of eight production facilities have been planned, with Korea serving as the central hub. Small and medium-sized EVs will be manufactured in Europe, while China will handle mid to large-sized EVs.

Kia plans to develop a wide range of EVs priced between US$ 30,000 to US$ 80,000. These will include smaller EVs like the EV5, EV4 and EV3. However, in emerging markets like India, the carmaker will initially focus on the EV6 and EV9.

Kia also plans to set up exclusive showrooms for its EV line-up in India.

All-new Kia EV5 globally unveiled

The new Kia EV5 will use the LFP Blade battery pack from BYD.

Kia has taken the wraps off the production version of its new EV5 SUV at the 2023 Chengdu Motor Show. The production version of the new electric SUV retains the boxy and upright design elements from the concept - unveiled earlier this year. The Kia EV5 also borrows a lot of styling elements from the brand's larger flagship EV, the EV9.

Starting with the front, the electric SUV gets a full-width light bar with L-shaped LED DRLs positioned at the corners of the main headlamp unit. The SUV features a minimalistic look on the sides with just the front fenders and rear haunches. The production version of the EV5 also features conventional side mirrors, replacing the camera-based wing mirrors seen in the concept. The rear also carries forward the clean design with a full-width LED tail light and an integrated roof spoiler. The SUV rides on production-ready aero wheels with a unique design.

Inside, the Kia EV5 retains the concept's twin-screen layout on the dashboard, however, the seating arrangement has been changed. The front passenger seat though has an extended base that covers the centre tunnel - which could be a booster seat. The Kia EV5 will come with all the bells and whistles in terms of features and tech. Some of these include mood lighting, multiple upholstery options, wireless charging and smartphone connectivity; among plenty of others.

The new Kia EV5 will use the LFP Blade battery pack from BYD. However, the exact specifications of the powertrain is yet to be revealed. Kia is also yet to mention the dimensions of the EV5, although reports do suggest it could measure around 4,600 mm in length and have a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The kerb weight of the EV5 will be under 2 tonnes.
