7 years & 58000km with my Honda Activa 125: Periodic service update

Main issue was there is an oil leak and when they drained the oil only around 100-150 ml was left.

BHPian BLACNWYTE recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Seventeenth Service Update:

I was planning to get Blu serviced during the last week of December or the first week of January, however, in the first week of December Blu was experiencing some excessive vibrations while idling and I decided to push up my schedule and get him serviced at the earliest.

Gave Blue for service at the same place as last time (EVM Honda, Neeramankara, Trivandrum) on 09.12.2023 second Saturday. Due to excessive bookings for service and since I didn't have a booking, SA told me that Blu will be serviced only by Monday and I was okay with it.

The works I wanted done were checking out the vibrations, tightening of brakes, engine oil change and overall tightening of nuts and bolts. I also told them to check for any other issues since Blu has crossed 7 years.

Monday morning I received a call from the SA that listed a few more problems than I expected. Main issue was there is an oil leak and when they drained the oil only around 100-150 ml was left. They wanted to replace the head gasket. Further, the brake cables have become hardened due to age and were replaced along with the levers. The rear suspension bush was shot and got it replaced. The air filter and spark plug were also replaced. The horn switch had popped out earlier and I had put it back. However, since then it needed to be pressed hard for the horn to function and so the switch was also replaced.

Apart from this the usual engine oil change, brake and clutch overhaul were done. I haven't observed any white/ bluish white smoke from the exhaust so the oil leaking into the engine and burning is ruled out for now. May be it was just leaking out due to the faulty seal/ gasket. Point to note is that there was no oil marks on the floor where I park Blu so I didn't know there was a leak. I think the vibrations were due to the less oil since now its not there.

I am relieved that I took Blu for service sooner otherwise I would have ended up with a seized engine. One other good thing is that, due to the AMC pacakge I took last time, I saved about Rs. 700/- from the final bill. So this AMC was worth it. Total Bill amounted to Rs. 3325/- with parts and labour.

The HASS bundled up all the replaced parts (old) and kept it in the under-seat storage which I found out upon reaching home. Now I don't know where I'll dispose these junk. Well, at least I know they replaced the parts.

Severe back pain from riding a scooter daily: Ways to fix the problem?

I'm only 28 years old & suffering from back spasms in my lower back and strain on my neck and shoulder area.

BHPian pranavshet recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Respected members,

I wanted advice on the following topic:

Context: I have been riding a Honda Activa 125 for the past 8.5 years. Earlier my daily running was hardly 10 kms a day. I used to commute mostly by bus.

However, due to a change in the organization last year & due to poor bus connectivity on that route I had no other option but to use my Activa on that route. My daily usage of Activa escalated from 10 km a day to 45 km a day.

Last year my body somehow managed to bear the additional burden. But this year and certainly now my body has started protesting. I have been suffering from back spasms in my lower back and strain on my neck and shoulder area. Also, my hamstring has started to hurt. Please note I'm only 28 years old.

I have observed that the suspension of Activa 125 is very soft at the front which leads to it bottoming out and the rear one being excessively stiff.

I ride between 40 to 55kmph. Also, my vehicle is being regularly serviced. Even my mum complains of the rear suspension being stiff.

I just wanted to know if I can deal with this problem by making adjustments to my riding style.

Should I stop riding a scooter? I don't intend to upgrade at least in a year as I have some other commitments.

Would love to know your valuable views on this.

Here's what BHPian ebonho had to say on the matter:

Maybe it's got nothing to do with your scooter and just your general fitness that has taken a nosedive.

Fitness changes in as little as 3 weeks. That has been proven by sports physiologists. For elite athletes.

So for a common man, a year is a long time. And youth is no guarantee of fitness.

Here's what BHPian AulusGabinius had to say on the matter:

Dude, 55 km on an Activa on bad roads? Kudos to your superhuman endurance for doing that. No, as someone who also graduated from a 1st gen Activa to a bike, riding style is not going to make enough of a difference. The Activa 125's suspension is not even close to as nice as many others, and even the best scooter is going to cause problems at that distance on bad roads.

The only thing you could do short of changing the vehicle is:

  1. Start strengthening your lower and mid-back muscles. Push-ups, surya namaskar, deadlifts, and the good old Indian jor are all good options to do. As many as you can, but keep in mind your fitness level and take a trainer's advice if necessary.
  2. Try and move around while riding. Move to the front seat and back seat after a few minutes as your back starts hurting, change your arm positions, stretch the neck a few times and so on.

Other than that, changing bikes to an ADV seems like your only real option. Expulse or Scram suggest themselves.

Here's what BHPian Castro Gunner had to say on the matter:

Your problem resonates with mine.

I had the same problem of back pain (But I ride an SF250) thinking that roads and bikes were the problem. For a 28-year-old this shouldn't be one except the occasional pains. No physiotherapy/homoeopathy/ayurveda treatment helped.

Finally, I was found to be deficient in Vitamin D3! Took an injection and the pain vanished like magic.

I would highly recommend you to take the test.

Also as others recommend, if you are severely out of shape that could be a reason.

Here's what BHPian b16h22 had to say on the matter:

Scooters are terrible on the back. I picked up a tailbone injury trying to daily Access 125 over bad roads. Took me almost two years to recover. It is not just the poor suspension travel and the small wheels, the riding position of most scooters puts all the stress on your lower back. If your seat foam has collapsed and you are a heavier rider, you will be sitting on the seat frame in no time.

And you can't keep your upper body relaxed because there is nothing to hold the scooter with your lower body, like a motorcycle. I never had a single trouble riding my motorcycles which included a stiffly sprung Duke 390 over bad patches for a whole day. Do yourself a favour and stop riding the Activa. 45kms is a lot for a scooter on our roads. Switch to a proper motorcycle, ideally one with a neutral or slightly leaned forward riding position with foot pegs in the middle and not the front.

11 years with my Suzuki Access 125: Likes, dislikes & maintenance

Pretty much the ownership has been delightful, but I have been facing a particular issue for the past 7 years

BHPian JDMBOI recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Howdy! Team BHPians

This is my very first post and before proceeding, I would like to thank the moderator/Administrator for approving my membership.

Purchased in May 2012. It has been 11 Years and it's still going strong.

Recent Pictures:

Back in 2018:

Double plate might trigger someone (the body is fiberglass didn't want to take the risk of drilling and possibly making a crack).

Odometer Reading:

33,285. Mostly done by me except 1000-1500 done by my father and relatives.

It's pretty much brand new (thanks to my OCD) many people have complimented me on that. A small story on that - Was outside a shop with my mother ( September 2023) an old person around 50 asked me if it was electric and when I purchased it. When I said it's a 2012 model and it was not electric (you won't believe it) he was flabbergasted and even told his other colleagues to come and check out my ride.

Love the silver colour:

Mileage:

In the city I usually get 40-42 kmpl and on long trips 50+ (I do it occasionally, but would not recommend doing more than 50KM one way). Mileage is not calculated by the Tank to Tank method. I usually fill with Rs. 300 when the fuel needle comes to the lowest bar (not empty) and check the kilometres done when it reaches the same spot. With Rs. 300 worth of petrol, I do 120-125 KM easily sometimes 130 in the city

Likes:

  • Storage - I love the huge storage under the seat it stores more items than the new access.
  • Acceleration - There is a power band that starts around 35 KMPH and then it moves fast and the exhaust note changes too and I love that.
  • Design - Love the design that's why it was purchased over Activa back in 2012 and still LOVE it over the new access.
  • Pillon grab handle - The pillon grab handle gives a secure hold to old age people and gives support to their back too (just like an Avenger pillion seat)
  • Lock - Love the locking mechanism of access, it's killing two birds with one stone. I think you all know that you could open the seat plus lock the handle without removing the key.

Low front fascia - The front fascia doesn't protrude like new access while riding. Even my cousin noticed that and said your access is like "Small bacha" (Small Kid) he could see more of the road.

Side footrest - The side footrest (small) is perfectly executed, way better than other competitors. Suzuki ruined it in a new one.

The big footrest is robust and well tucked in compared to the new one where it's at some slight angle.

Tucked in well.

  • Ground Clearance - It's great I have had no issue at all and have scraped 2-3 times in its life
  • Fuel cap position - I prefer under-seat position rather than outside (on new one) Small story- I was riding my cousin's new access (May 2022) and had a devastating experience closing the cap. Would post an ownership review on that too.

  • Exhaust Note - Love the exhaust note, it changes based on input and around 35-50 KMPH it gets throaty.
  • Fiberglass body - The front mudguard doesn't develop rust as you might have seen on Activa.

Dislikes:

Small tyres - The tyre profile is 90/90-12 inch you have to slow down on bad road surfaces and even for small potholes.

Stiff ride - The ride is stiff if you are solo and good when it's duo.

Pass - No pass button provided but can't complain since it was 2012 but it is still not available in new access.

Brake - The drum brake does the work but would appreciate more bite.

Brake lever colour - It started fading way early, with poor paint quality. it fades more during winter and all the black residue ends up on fingertips.

Rear brake lock - I found it to be less useful as most of riders keep their brake tight and there is no way you could engage it, to do so you would have to adjust the brake.

Plastic mud guard - The rear tyre hits the small guard provided above the tyre if the pillion is healthy and like to sit more toward the back.

Wire rubbing - Below the headlight area, have to do a DIY to save it.

Top Speed:

The top speed I have attained is 80 KMPH on the highway, I don't condone high speed it was just a test. Above 60 you will start losing confidence. maximum speed that you should do is 55-60 km/h.

Things I Want:

  • Pass button.
  • Bright headlight. The current one does the work.
  • Bigger size tyres.
  • Disk brake.

Service Cost:

Always got it serviced at the authorized service centre, average service cost is Rs. 900. The most I have paid is Rs. 1400 (some parts were changed more on that later) and the least is Rs. 650 ish.

Few recent service bills:

Service Experience:

As I said every service is done at an authorized service centre near me i.e. Sodhi Suzuki, Delhi Road, Sonipat, Haryana. I would rate them 8/10. They get things done when you point out the problem you are having. The best thing is if any part needs replacement they ask on the phone before changing any expensive part found in bad shape and might give up in future apart from what you have told them.

Insurance:

The only thing I don't like is the insurance from United India Insurance Company Ltd. Never taken a single claim and I have been paying Rs. 1100 ish for the past 11 years. Except for 2 years where I paid 720 something each time. (insured from IFFCO Tokio back in 2013 and 2014) Why did I do that?

Poor experience at the Sodhi dealership, at that time, it was Saturday when I reached out to get the insurance renewed and they said we don't do insurance on Saturday when I asked them about Monday they said we would do it and don't worry about the date then I went on Monday and to my surprise the guy who does the insurance was not present. I went the next day and they had the AUDACITY to say, Sir, your insurance has expired and it has been 3 days so we will not do it.

In 2015 IFFCO insurance agent closed his office and had to go to the dealer again to get United insurance they hesitated and said no but after convincing they agreed.

Latest insurance cost Rs, 1259.

Problem faced and stranded (kind of):

Pretty much the ownership has been delightful, but I have been facing a particular issue for the past 7 years i.e. engine would stop all of a sudden. Faced it 6 times.

First in 2015 at that time I thought it was because of poor petrol quality and it started back within a minute after a few tries. It happened a few more times always thought about poor quality petrol and told the service advisor, he changed the spark plug and when I completely forgot about this issue it happened again but started back within a minute and I finally found the culprit behind all this in 2022

How?

When I got it serviced and took it out after a day or two, to pick up my mother it stopped responding to my throttle input and a small blast sound from the exhaust and DIED my mother was concerned as she knew I take very good care of the ride. I called the service centre and told them to come and take a look they arrived within 10 minutes (was 2-3 KM away from the service centre) they tried self-start and used kick too but no luck and finally opened the seat and Found no spark while cranking. A technician named Jitender (from Sodhi Suzuki) said I know the issue he wiggled some wire behind the front panel (behind the number plate) and it started in 1 try and said the wire was loose if it happens again just wiggle the wire.

Reason:

It was the service guys and them being lethargic. It probably happened when they changed the speedometer wire and just shoved it off by not doing it the proper way and possibly hitting the other wire joints.

See the photo attached.

Encountered it once again in September 2023 and it was Déjà vu as my mother was with me, I simply hit the exact spot (see arrow in picture) as told and it started in 1 try.

I have noticed play in the handle, it can be felt by holding the front brake and giving a push forward & going over a speed bump. Told the service guy he didn't believe me at first but later on said you were right the screw was loose and he had torqued it. Faced it again after 300 KM waited for the next service and got it fixed (again torqued), has done 800 KM ish so far and now it has appeared again. (kindly give some suggestions on how can I fix this).

Parts changed:

So far few parts have been changed.

  • Rear brakes - 3 times
  • Speedometer wire - 2 times (I think it got damaged due to driving on a waterlogged road, more on that later on)
  • Engine belt - 2 times (cost around Rs. 470 was changed a year ago for the second time) Again thanks to JITENDER who willingly checked just to be sure and there was a crack and some rubber groves were missing and possibly saved me from being stranded.
  • Front brake wire - 1 time
  • Rear tyre - Went with OEM spec of 90/90-12 inch MRF at 28082 KM
  • Battery - Changed twice always went with EXCIDE.
  • Rear brake light bulb - Once
  • Front Wheel bearing - Once (on 11-11-2021 at 27216 KM)
  • Air intake pipe - Once

  • Spark plug - Once
  • Rear brake spring - 2 times

Broken Parts:

The front mudguard developed cracks over the years and now it moves back and forth (also rubbing against the front speedometer and brake wire resulting in losing some part of it (see picture))

Tried replacing it but the cost was around Rs. 1500 (a few years back) few months back asked the price it was Rs. 2600 plus labour I tried to do it under insurance and was told it would take at least 7 days to process it and I would have to leave the vehicle here and then few more days to fix it. I asked about a loaner vehicle and was outright denied (Don't have this service). Was ready to do it but was told to pay Rs. 3000 because insurance (United) will pay only 30% max (Rs. 900) of the said amount and it will be credited to your account after repairs are performed. Since it was not bothering me I didn't opt for a claim. Poor experience with United The front foot mat has also shrunk.

Rust:

The silencer has developed some rust, have painted it three times and it is always the same exact spot.

Rust on wheel:

The front suspension lower mount has some discolouration on both sides due to being exposed to water (did some riding in heavy rain clogged water)

Waterlogged riding:

I have ridden around 4 times (always to pick up my father when there was no public transport available in heavy rain) and let me tell you it doesn't disappoint I have seen Splendor and other bikes plus Activa, Jupiter etc. stopped but this thing goes and my father appreciates the capability and always say, "They don't make them like they used to."

Conclusion:

The ownership has been bliss so far and I am very happy with the purchase.

Note - This is my first post so pardon me for any mistakes I may have made and constructive criticism is appreciated so feel free to give some ideas/suggestions on how I can improve.

Ciao

Understanding the difference in technology between bikes & scooters

I have both, a Honda CB350 and an Activa & still the scooter always gives me trouble.

BHPian aniketi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

This question has been in my mind for a long time now. Hope experts here will be able to answer. What is the difference between technology for Motorcycles and scooters? For example a Honda motorcycle and Honda Activa? IMHO both should have similar technology but totally different designs and purpose. I am asking this because scooters always give starting trouble, not sure why. If you don't use Activa for 3-4 days, you have to make an attempt to start it with multiple button starts or kicks. Whereas for bikes, mostly it starts in the first starter and never gives any issue even if you start it after a week. I have a Honda CB350 and it always starts in first starter only, but when it comes to my wife's Activa, it always gives trouble when not used for 3-4 days. Both are from Honda and are well-maintained. Still, scooters always give trouble whereas bikes are mostly trouble-free in this area.

Ideally, both should be using the same technology here for starting a vehicle and should work seamlessly. But in the actual world, it is not. Also kicks for scooters like Activa are very poor and take special skill to start. Bike kicks are straightforward and you can easily start a bike quickly. Hope experts throw some light here. Thanks in advance.

Here's what BHPian ashis89 had to say on the matter:

You're comparing a fuel-injected bike with an old carburetor-fed scooter. Try starting an old Honda Unicorn, a Gladiator or even a Splendor (newer ones) and you will see the difference. A lot also depends on the fueling.

The BS6 scooters start in 1-2 kicks even after 8-10 days of dormancy.

PS: wherever I have owned/ridden two different generations of the same model, I found the newer generations had better fuel efficiency but invariably suffered from cold start issues, which alludes to my last point. HH Splendor, Passion, Glamour, Bajaj Caliber (and 115), Pulsar - all had this observation across generations.

Here's what BHPian Sebring had to say on the matter:

I'm sorry but our old Unicorn (2006) and Bajaj Discover 125 (2005) never gave starting trouble. Not once, unless there came a time to replace the battery. I'm also starting to question this now.

Here's what BHPian antz.bin had to say on the matter:

I live in a society with ~1000 flats. If I hear a long starter being run, being run multiple times, 9 times out of 10, it is a scooter. I work from home and my desk is next to the window so I tend to hear such things a lot. I wouldn't be able to make out the brand of the scooter but we all know which one is the largest selling model. If it helps, I have seen this happen on a 10-day-old Honda Grazia as well.

There *is* a problem that exists. A problem that was solved by Yamaha using the more powerful Smart Motor Generator (SMG) on their new Fascino and RayZ scooters which make no sound at all.

It would make sense that we acknowledge that a problem exists and switch to a superior product that doesn't have that problem. Already far too many Activas are selling, it's time to choose differently maybe?

Facing starting issues on my Suzuki Access 125: Cut hose the cause

Didn't start unless the throttle was cranked significantly more than usual.

BHPian shancz recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

The Access started shutting off at throttle-idle while moving. Didn't start unless the throttle was cranked significantly more than usual.

Seems like its expressing its solidarity with its brethren. Or maybe I jinxed it by saying that I had not experienced any starting trouble before or after that incident

Took it to the ASC and also clubbed in some pending replacements with the service and the issue seems to have been sorted.

I didn't hang around but I was informed that air and spark were fine but one of the "pipes" in the carb wasn't, which was changed. Saw a lot of rat marks in the underseat-engine area and one hose was cut.

Here's a pic of the cut hose before going to the Suzuki ASC, rat marks visible.

Asked for an open wash of the engine area, note that they won't do this for BS6 vehicles. Apart from the regular service/checks and requested repairs they just changed the fuel pipe and adjusted the carb. The hose pipe was out of stock and has been ordered.

The scooter seems to run ok, although the idling is a bit unstable which should settle after some riding and then a re-adjustment, as advised.

Will get that done once the hose is back in stock.

Why we decided to buy a Suzuki Avenis 125: Ownership experience so far

The hunt began with the usual contenders like the Honda Activa, Suzuki Access, Honda Dio and TVS Ntorq.

BHPian Dramitn recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

It all started when I expressed to my wife the wish to upgrade my 2014 KTM Duke 390. Now usually the reply is how I always keep dreaming of things and not concentrating on the important things (like planning a long holiday or a shopping spree with her). But this time I was surprised when she said yes it's been some time that you haven’t upgraded the bike. And so with newfound happiness, I began my search for a worthy replacement to my bike which had seen me through the years steadfastly and with great memories. As I began my search I looked over to my wife who was pouting and reading a book. I got the hint that if I had to replace my bike I would have to upgrade my wife’s bike first!

And so the hunt began with the usual contenders like the Honda Activa, Suzuki Access, Honda Dio and TVS Ntorq. I thought we should consider the electric options like the Ola S1 or the Ather 450 too. But that was dismissed because of the uncertain service quality in my area. And considering we expect to keep the bike long-term and the uncertainty of the long-term review and battery replacement we decided to skip the electric options. With a relative chiming in about the Yamaha Aerox and the Aprilia SR160, I perked up thinking that would be an interesting bike to explore but had to be dropped because of the size and ease of driving for the wife which brought us back to the usual contenders.

We checked out the Activa and found it to be pretty boring to drive and lacklustre looks also the sheer volume of Activas sold with a few problems searching for your own in the parking! And the stories of the mistaken Activa being driven away by somebody else didn’t appeal to us. So we moved on to the Dio but the design didn’t agree with us so we went to the Suzuki stable and were immediately pushed towards the Suzuki Access. The drive of the Suzuki Access was smooth and the power was linear in delivery but the aesthetics of the scooter reminded her of an old design which had not been changed for a long time.

The Suzuki Burgman caught our eye and we checked it out. The drive was smooth and the suspension and seat were very comfortable. But she didn’t find the design appealing as it was front and she weighs in the 50s so didn’t find it comfortable in handling the bike. In the corner, we spied another bike which when asked were told to be called the Avenis. I thought the design looked familiar and asked if it was a collaboration with the TVS. Because I found the design very similar to the Ntorq, it did seem to share similarities with the latter.

We asked about the very few posters and promotions about the bike because we hadn’t heard about it and got the reply that the Access is the star of the show so the Avenis wasn’t showcased as much. We took a test ride and the ride was smooth and the handling was comfortable with the suspension having a good balance. The design language was new and appealing. With the missus expressing the decision that was the only bike she felt comfortable with, it was decided on the spot to book the vehicle.

The delivery of the vehicle was taken the next day itself with a few accessories such as the guards and the floor mat. The delivery experience itself was nothing to be spoken about with a rather drab affair and the handing over of the keys and documents.

So without further ado, I present to you our new Suzuki Avenis!

The experience so far has been good with the bike having a good peppy engine and adequate power with a linear acceleration. The brakes are good and do the job well with good bite. The phone charger is a good addition.

Overall a good all-rounder bike for everyday use and small errands. The service visits have been short for routine maintenance.

I will update the thread as and when I have anything significant to share. Other owners and users, please share your experience and observations about the bike too!

Did the 16th service on my Honda Activa 125: Tasks performed & costs

I felt that the decreased fuel wfficiency, power loss and flat spots may be due to the failing clutch and since it was six months from the last service

BHPian BLCNWYTE recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Sixteenth Service Update:

So in the last week of June 2023, unexpectedly, Blu was throwing some tantrums. There was sudden power loss during acceleration, flat spots while cruising and overall reduction in power delivery to the back wheel. And worst of all, the FE had dropped to 40kmpl avg for the past few months. So I was considering buying an EV for my daily commute of 30 kms. Since I am not willing to sell Blu, and impracticality of keeping two scooter for one person made me decide against getting an EV. Even though, people close to me were advising on selling Blu and getting an EV, I did some calculations and found that for my commute, it will take me more than 75 months to break even. Hence decided against it and worte it off as a knee jerk reaction to the low FE.

During the second to last service the HASS had mentioned about clutch shoe being cracked and needing replacement. Since Blu was functioning smoothly I had kept the clutch replacement pending and during the last service the HASS didn't mention it at all.

I felt that the decreased FE, power loss and flat spots may be due to the failing clutch and since it was six months from the last service, I decided to get Blu serviced properly. So, have him to EVM HASS, Neeramankara, Trivandrum this time on 1st of July 2023.

So I tell them about the power loss and higher idling speed but nothing about the clutch issue. Then I asked for the usual service engine and gear oil change, air filter cleaning, brake cleaning and tightening and general tightening of all the nuts and bolts.

They said they will check the issues and if any additional work is there they will call me. I have Blu in the morning and by 12 PM I get a call from HASS and surely it is about the clutch assembly. I asked the SA whether repair was possible and he said in the negative. So gave the go ahead for replacement.

In the evening I get a call from HASS and they informed Blu was ready after all works. And asked me whether I would like to take an AMC for the service. Now many of us know that Honda AMC is not that great unless you have a whole lot of labour involved. However, since this was a part and labour intensive service I took the AMC and I guess, overall, it's not that bad for me.

The total bill of the service came to Rs. 5098/- and AMC Charges came to Rs. 1020/-.

The total bill was Rs.6018/- which would have been Rs. 5750/- without AMC. Now with the AMC, I'll get 2 free washes and discount on parts and labour for the next 3 services. Which I guess will only cover the AMC costs. Hence the overall savings could be zero.

Anyhow, after the clutch assembly replacement and service, Blu is as good as new. The pick up has improved and the sound also have become better. The best part is that for the past 3-4 fill up since the service Blu is returning an impressive FE of 50 kmpl. That is 10kmpl better than the previous few months.

So, Blu is back to his regular duties, renewed and improved and hopefully will continue so for a long time to come.

The Odo stands at 55400 kms.

Unpleasant experience with connected features on my Suzuki Burgman

Phone used to frequently disconnect from the scooter. This was fixed after a lot of discussions a with the service center.

BHPian Burgman_tales recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Since this is the top thread on burgman on this forum, I'll share a particular bad experience I have with this scooter regarding connected features.

I bought the Ride Connect Edition (in Jun'22) specifically for easier navigation in Bangalore without needing to keep the phone on a holder or having my wife navigate from behind (which leads to a lot of heated discussions ). I had tested the navigation feature on a very short 5-10 min test drive as well.

But after I got it, it turned out to be completely useless most of the time. Below are the issues I faced:

Phone used to frequently disconnect from the scooter. This was fixed after a lot of discussions a with service center/Suzuki customer care through some reinstalls and setting changes on the app.

The underlying map and navigation is of MapMyIndia and it is just very poor in terms of search and navigation compared to Google maps. Most of the times it redirects through a very very longer route which nobody would take. Decently popular but newer places are not there on the map at all available to search or navigate to. Changing the route you take will screw up everything as rerouting is completely broken.

Suzuki navigation showing longer route:

Google showing correct shortest route.

The ride connect app is just horrible and very laggy. It does not even allow you to zoom out and see the whole route since some time now. (The above screenshots are older).

Facing starting issues on my Activa 125: What could be the cause

It takes at least 5 minutes of kicking to start it, when left unridden for more than a day.

Hello everyone, I have a Honda Activa 125. It has a weird problem. It takes at least 5 minutes of kicking to start it, when left unridden for more than a day. It's a serious issue especially for my wife. But, if ridden every day it takes only half a kick/self to start. Otherwise, it works perfectly, excellent acceleration, etc.

Please suggest some way-out, local mechanics and official Honda service-people have no idea what to do.

Here's what BHPian shancz had to say on the matter:

Depends on vehicle age, usage and mileage. What's yours ?

Some memory items are:

Check the usual : air filter, spark plugs

Check the carb/fueling. Might need some cleaning due to downtimes

Here's what BHPian Opanna had to say on the matter:

Please share the below information so that someone can atleast try answering

How old is the Activa?

How old is the battery?

Especially with you mentioning that it takes several kicks to start, i can sense that the battery is weak. Try recharging or if gone bad replace it.

I am surprised that Honda Authorized Service Centre and local mechanic failed to diagnose this issue. Did they check the battery and was it found perfect?

Here's what BHPian Bala02 had to say on the matter:

Honda two-wheeler engines inherently have this cold start issue. I use to experience the same in my unicorn and Activa. If vehicle is unused for a long time, I simply use the choke and it starts after few tried. One key is to keep the battery in top notch condition as this helps us from refraining from kick start.

My trusted local mechanic also made some tweaks which helped.

Here's what BHPian raptor_diwan had to say on the matter:

It must have a battery. Please check the battery, as weak batteries can sometimes cause starting problems. If the Activa is aged, inspect the spark plug and ensure it is in good condition. If it is worn out or dirty, consider replacing it.

Here's what BHPian Sunil@KA25 had to say on the matter:

The battery very much seems to be the culprit here.

I am having an Activa 3G, which is close to 8 years new (new because the odo reading is only 4000 odd km till date). The OEM Exide battery was recharged once about 4 years ago and now it looks like I have to replace it.

The reason? the scooter that used to start with a half kick on the side stand itself, with the choke activated, is now getting kicked a couple of times on the main / center stand before it sputters to life.
My initial suspicion was the IOCL petrol that I had refueled instead of the HP one which was earlier used 95% of the times, but even after going back to HP also the issue persists. The horn that was still working earlier is now croaking in tune with the monsoon frogs!

How my Honda Activa came back to my family 9 years after selling it

I was both sad and excited when my dad said that were going to get a new scooter which ended being the then brand new 2013 Vespa 125 SX .

BHPian GreasyCarb55 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Well how do I start this one? I've always had a soft spot for scooters in my heart, especially the older Honda Activa's. The first scooter in our family was a 2006 Honda Activa, a black one with grey/white stickers. I have fond memories of that scooter. Travelling to my uncle's place on a Friday after school because he'd always buy me Masala Dosa and Kesari bath at New Shanti Sagar in Vijaynagar the next morning or always tagging along to buy groceries because I'd always come home with a packet of Gems and/or Cherries. I had fond memories of that scooter.

So unsurprisingly I was both sad and excited when my dad said that were going to get a new scooter which ended being the then brand new 2013 Vespa 125 SX as my mother loved the retro styling. As much as I was excited for the shiny new bright yellow scooter. We had kept that thing in immaculate condition, always serviced at the dealer we bought it from and always kept clean, I was sad to see that old Activa go after serving us for 7 years and around 65,000km.

Fast forward to late September 2022, I was visiting family and my uncle said he had "something waiting for me outside" I walked outside to find well, our old Activa! He was looking for a cheap used scooter to do grocery runs with and he found the man who bought the scooter from us over 9 years ago selling it. He picked it up and with the help of a mechanic he knew restored it to near showroom condition. The new odometer read 5000km back then as he had already been using it for a few months at that point, the old meter assembly stopped working at around 92-93,000km and the previous owner didn't bother replacing it. It's sitting at 6500km (when I started writing this in February) so it's safe to assume that this scooter has done almost 1 lakh km as it was the previous owners daily use two wheeler.
