Mahindra XUV500 W4 variant launched

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the cut price, entry-level version of the XUV500 crossover. Called the W4, the new variant of the XUV500 is priced at 10.83 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Mumbai, a lakh six thousand rupees cheaper than the W6 variant, which is priced at 11.90 lakh rupees. The W4 variant of the XUV500 skimps on equipment to arrive at a lower price tag. However, key safety features remain standard. Mechanically too, the XUV500 in W4 guise is unchanged.

The crossover is powered by the same 2.2 liter mHawk turbo diesel engine that is also found on other variants of the XUV500. The motor outputs 140 Bhp-330 Nm and is mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox that drives the front wheels of the crossover. The XUV500 is Mahindra's first homegrown monocoque SUV, and the ride and handling package offered on this crossover is a generation ahead of that featured on the previous Mahindra flagship, the Scorpio.

Coming to the notable features that the Mahindra XUV500 retains, here's a round up:

  • Projector headlamps and LED parking lamps
  • Dual tone interiors
  • Twin airbags
  • ABS+EBD
  • Disc brakes on all 4 wheels
  • Start-Stop system
  • 4 speaker Integrated music system with CD & MP3 playback
  • Automatic climate control
  • Tilt function for power steering
  • Electrically adjustable wing mirrors
  • 6 way adjustable driver's seat
  • Tumble down 2nd and 3rd row seats

Clearly, the XUV500's W4 variant is not a completely de-speced model despite the lower pricing and positioning. The XUV500's pricing could eat into the sales of the Mahindra Scorpio, many of whose variants are priced above that of the XUV500 W4 variant. Also, the likes of the Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano could feel the heat of the XUV500 W4 variant's pricing. The XUV500's higher variants, though packing in a slew of features and creature comforts, have been found wanting in terms of long term reliability of the new features. In that light, the W4 variant of the XUV500 could be the ideal buy for prospective buyers who're unwilling to be subjected to the gremlins associated with the higher variants of the crossover.
