Doc... what an awesome thread! Love the way you have described the journey and all modifications. Pajeros SFX has been in a different league altogether when it comes to ride quality over its competition. Excellent choice for overlanding IMO.

I may have to borrow some of the mods to my Atlantis as well. I do have rock sliders in my immediate list. Awning looks like another good option for us. I have same continentals tires sortlisted as replacement of current Bighorns, based on all what I have been hearing about these Contis from TSK, Karan561, bhp and columbus and now you picking up these continentals in your own Pajero is another feather in their cap. I have to be honest, I was somewhat confused between Michelin Latitude Cross and Cross Contacts and now I am sure which one should I go for.

About the CB Radio, we have been having a discussion on this offline for a while. Could you please clear our doubts on this topic?

• What bandwidth is allowed in India?
• What are the restrictions in place for their day-to-day usage?
• Any recommendations on CB Radio models and Reception Antennas? Best place to buy? Or is it cheaper to get it from abroad (e.g. US)?

Our end usage is during our fun filled weekend off-roading and during convoy travel during long trips to Himachal, J&K or Corbett etc.

Looking forward to more updates and more modifications on this thread. Let me say it again, what an awesome car!

On the tires, how do you find the ride in AT compared to previous HT tyres? There should be some 'Tupper-Tupper-Tupper' kind of sound at speeds above 80kmph due to the AT pattern.
Is that an OE size or you did an Up size?

Go for contis. Gogi (V16) who was with us on an Independence trail with his Fortuner on Latitude Cross really struggled on wet grass/muck and his tyres were slick in no time whereas the contis were like spikes.

Though the Latitudes are better on road (being much closer to HT) is what i hear.

About the CBs.

We bought them off Pramod Pal Singh who at that time was the sole importer of the President range. Haven't honestly done much research into the bandwidth etc and took his word for the legality. Plus it came with a small card stating the laws and no license required.

Ofcourse abroad is cheaper and you get more varieties because if you hand carry it down, you save all taxes and maybe customs too.

There are no restrictions for the use of CB radios. But be prepared to argue with a cop if he is unaware. Not that i have faced such a situation. Yet.

My friend Ravi Nayar has done a lot of research on CBs and i'll point him to this thread and ask him to answer your queries.

It's an ARB clone.

I found no difference, intact rather, i found the AT ride better. But you must know that when i bought the vehicle, the tyres had already done 25000kms. New tyres always feel softer.

As for handling i felt no difference. Do note that i don't push a heavy suv to really find limits.

Haven't noticed any sounds. However, these contis have an annoying habit of picking up small stones in the treads and shooting them out into the wheel well.

Yes, upsized the tyres on negative offset rims. New tyre size: 31x10.5x15

Simply superb thread and a very helpful one for those looking to prepare their vehicles for overlanding. The level of details that you have put in is excellent. And to echo what GTO has said already, it is one of the best looking Pajeros.
It would have been great if all the things were available in Flipkart or Amazon instead of AliExpress. The wait for AliExpress is excruciatingly painful.

The tpms is temporarily mounted in this place. Final location to still be decided and then will be hard wired.

The PAJERO written panel will house a row of rocker switches for lights, etc.

Awesome progress so far! Eagerly awaiting the camping stuff details. Do you plan to make it an out-and-out expedition vehicle or want a dual purpose (city and wilderness) kind of ride?

That said, for a complete expedition vehicle, how would you rate Vcross against, maybe, Super-Milo? Given, both get the same mods?

I'm taking notes as I read the thread, Getting a Pajero 2010 next month. The upgrades you've mentioned are just fantastic. Did not realize these upgrades were readily available.

Was a little scared with your clutch issue, would make sure I get a second option on the one that I am planning to get too.

It will be a combo vehicle for now. Daily drive and touring.

The Isuzu V Cross is a better driving vehicle than the Getaway and would be great in my opinion. Super Milo is a custom prepared Mahindra Getaway.

Changed my windshield wipers this morning.

Noticed one of the blades was tearing a few days ago.

Went to my trusted shop at Opera House: Shreyas Motors. Have been dealing with the owner Hitesh since years and he's become a good friend now.

Told him i need regular Bosch wiper. And casually asked him the cost of the Aero Twins. I love how they clean the glass but find them too expensive. Plus while using on dried bird droppings and offroading mud, these tend to deteriorate quickly (even with copious amounts of water spray).

He showed me a Chinese clone. A pair for Rs. 400.

Told me that if i'm anyways open to changing blades every year, why not try these.

Took a risk and bought them



Cleaned the glass in the morning with Abro Spray and installed these. The old blades go as back up in the boot. Always carry a back up. The rear wiper blade was good and not replaced.



Quite happy with the clean sweep compared to my previous year old wipers.







On another note:

I was a great fan of iOttie one touch mobile holder. I hate sticking those "suckers" on glass and prefer a clear windshield. Therefore had bought the iOttie had also 'sucks' to the dashboard.



I bought one for each car.

However, in the summers these suction cups cannot take our type of heat. They loose attachment and leave a sticky residue. The company says to wash under running water to rejuvenate the suction cups but these get spoilt beyond repair. Happened to three of them.

So i'm revising my recommendation not to buy. But what i really like about these are their one touch click operation. Put the mobile in and it snaps and holds the phone.

So i bought a good AC vent holder from Amazon:

I then swapped the mobile holding part to the iOttie one and i'm happy.

Wife hash't complained about decrease in AC blower (though she anyways hates the high setting - so it's all good).

As I told somewhere yesterday, they just don't make them like these anymore. This Pajero, Amol's Defender, they pull you by your heart strings and you can't help but give in to it.

Always wanted to get this after driving one close to 10,000 plus kms [in same color] but extincting service centers and the inability to find a good used example made me buy something else. Here is one SUV in which you don't have to buy after market suspension for better ride and handling. People who claim Safari/Aria/Storme has good ride should sit in a Pajero and see for themselves.

I have found the brakes to be very good as well [in stock MRF tires], steering to weigh nice and perfect and engine, despite on a very high note, this SUV was rock stable and could do as much as the speedo mentioned without scaring you as the current SUV's do.

Since you mention suspension, let me add a point.

A lot of people told me that since you are adding an offroad bumper which is heavy you will get a front suspension sag and need to upgrade to offroad suspension.

I decided to play it by the ear. If it sags a lot, i'll upgrade else won't. I'm dead against a lift and that's not on the books.

After the installation, there is no sag. Probably a millimetre or two nor have any dynamics changed. And mind you, these are OE shock absorbers done 94,000 kms.

That's made me stop looking for performance shocks. The day these need to be changed, i'm getting a new stock set for sure.

When i do get a winch i'll get one with synthetic rope to keep the weight down. A winch with wire rope weights approx 45kgs and the synthetic one should be half. Will weigh once i get one. Whenever budgets permit.

Plus a note on the bumper: It is airbag compliant. The dealer (and service centre advisor) confirmed that Pajero airbag sensors are inertia based and this bumper should not have an issue with airbag deployment.
