Love these cars. My second car I ever owned was a Peugeot 404. Just the regular sedan. I bought it in my home country, late 1970's for around fifty guilders. In those days I was a student and that was the sort of money I earned per week doing a paper round.

I cant remember how old it was at the time, but it wasn't in very good nick., but it got me and my friends around. It was pretty reliable, safe for the moment it blew one of its spark plugs right through the bonnet. Only time that ever happened to me. Getting to those plugs was always tricky because you needed a very long pipe wrench.

This 404 sedan when introduced was considered pretty much a high end type of car. Senior Executives drove around in them.

I spent a lot of time in Africe in the early to mid eighties and in those days there were endless 404s around. Not sure how many will have survived by now?

I love the couple and cabrio version. Very pretty cars. They must be getting pretty rare these days. I'm not 100% sure anymore but I thought the sedan was Pininfarina design so I guess the coupe and cabrio must be as well?

Hi Jeroen,

I used to live in the Netherlands from 1969-1972 as a kid. My dad was posted there (Limburg) with the Royal Canadian Air Force and he brought his 1966 404 Injection sedan over from Canada...sold it when we left in 1972. By then he had a new 504.

The Cabriolet and Coupé are not only Pininfarina designs, but they were built alongside Fiats, Alfas and Ferraris in Grugliasco Italy. The mechanical work was done in Sochaux France. Cheers!

Hi Mike,
Thanks. Mine was just a carburetor version. 1800cc I seem to recall. Very big hefty block. Tractor Grade!

The 504 was also a very nice car. Never owned one. But our next door neighbor had one. He was the head of the technical department of a shipping company. As I was going through Naval College at the time he often took me along on various trips. Very interesting. Whenever we travelled together he let me drive his Peugeot 504. Very comfortable and his was an injection model. Drove it all over Western Europe!

Four years Naval college taught me a lot about cars. They let us have access to all the universities workshops and tools every Friday afternoon. So just about all the student spent a few hours working on their cars. In those days you could still buy cars second hand at the price I mentioned. But it took a lot of spanner skills to keep them going. So that's what we did. On Friday afternoon patch up our cars, so we could drive for another week.
