Re: The 'not-so-obvious' advantages to buying pre-owned cars

In light of the ethanol blending roadmap in India how logical it is to look at pre-BS6.2 cars in the used car market. With the impending move to e10/ e20 wouldn't the older cars particularly luxury cars be more susceptible?

P.S. I am in the market for a car and am currently evaluating pre owned luxury cars/ new entry level luxury cars/ evs

Just buy it man. We anyways use a car for 5-6 years. So why worry? Govt. is not going to do anything drastic anytime soon.

Last April I picked up a 2011 Skoda Superb BS4 Diesel (CBU model). What a beautiful car. What a lovely DSG. I have spent a decent amount on the upkeep but it is nowhere close to the ridiculously exhorbidant EMIs in todays India.

I just renewed my PUC yesterday from the oldest pump in Ballard Estate. My emissions are 0.01....way below the 2.45 limit. I am looking at an absolutely wonderful engine used only 72000 clicks.

Just buy what you want and enjoy. Don't sweat too much.

Re: The 'not-so-obvious' advantages to buying pre-owned cars

Hello Fellow BHPians,

I’m a newbie here and really excitedto be a BHPian myself!

I’m looking to buy a used Polo 1.0 TSI Auto as a birthday gift for my wife. I found a 2022 model in Yamuna Nagar with approximately 12K km on the Odo and still under warranty till 2026. The asking price is around 9.5*Lac.

I have a couple of questions:

What should I be mindful of during the inspection? also, would it be wise to hire a PDI service like Zekardo or Cars24 for a used car?

The car is HR-registered, and the dealer advised updating my Aadhaar since I live in Gurgaon. I have some reservations—can I transfer the registration based on my rent agreement instead, and how would that impact insurance?

Thank you in advance for your support and gudiance on this.

Yes, always get a pre purchase inspection done, but have it done at the VW dealer, they have dealer level OBD scan tools that third party agents won’t have. Use the final report to negotiate the price down. If still in doubt, have your trusted mechanic also carry out an inspection and test drive.

Also check the service history yourself, there should be zero gaps in oil and filter changes every few months (max 1 year). Check every panel for bodywork/repaint.

Extensively test drive the car yourself, and check everything works inside the cabin. Follow the checklist linked below.

Personally, at around ~10L I’d pick up a 2015 Camry hybrid over a 2022 Polo with a 1L turbo engine. More power, more space, better reliability and better sound insulation.

Also if I recall, this thing was around 11L on road back in 2022, you’re overpaying at 9.5L for a 3 year old example. Add the fact that it’s been discontinued, I’d offer 7.5-8L tops.

If it’s HR registered, all you have to do is get an agent to update ownership and address details at the RTO, it’s within Haryana so you won’t have to pay state tax.

Re: The 'not-so-obvious' advantages to buying pre-owned cars

@AJ56, Thank you so much for your response on my query. It’s surely going to help me a lot, and I love the idea of the Camry Hybrid; however, I’m in search of a hatchback as it would be a gift to my wife as her first car.
We do have a Seltos GTX Plus MT in the family as my daily driver. Please feel free to suggest any alternative to the Polo with an automatic transmission, as she doesn’t favor a manual.

On the price, I honestly think you’re bang on. I’m pushing the dealer to reduce it to the 7.6–8.0*L range, and it might be finalised through on‑the‑table negotiations.

Appreciate your advice!

Oh if it’s a manual then skip it, I assumed the Polo was auto.

Camry is very easy to drive, I too learnt on one as it’s easy flick around with light controls. Put your wife in one, then in a Polo, she won’t go back to the Polo I almost guarantee it

With used cars, I’ve seen you get better value with a slightly nicer car as cheap cars tend to hold onto their value better. For eg. a 2013 Amaze and 2010 Accord are both worth around 2L in the used market. Despite being very different cars.

I20 N-line if you must get a sub 4m car, although I’ll still say get a larger car as sub compact’s don’t do as well in a crash. All the other hatchbacks are very underpowered (Mini’s, A45, etc notwithstanding).
