my son has a OEM unit from Honda in his City AVN which came with an OE Caska unit. When he tried to buy a three(?) year update. MMI had no records of the unit. After getting Honda service, Corporate and Local involved along with MMI, they were very help and shipped him the CD.

I think you used the software which you mentioned (createweb.be). My observation on MMI Routes were this:-
1. The routes were getting saved in the MapMyIndia\Routes directory.
2. The entire way points were stored as a text file. The file name always started with Route followed by a 8 digit number (eg: Route12345678.txt)
3. Inside this text file, the various way points we set are all stored in one line after the other.
4. The longitude & latitude needs to be fed in reverse order, from what you see in Google Maps.
5. For each line item in this text file, MapMyIndia is also computing the Grid Reference (based on its own internal maps), the Area, City, and PINCODE based on its own database.
6. The first place & the last place are automatically taken as start and end points. When the routes are displayed on the device (to choose from the saved routes), the Start Point & End Point gets displayed.

The challenges I faced was that, my Python script could not compute the MMI Grid referencing, and could not add the Area, City and Pin Code. I had a provision to get this entered manually - I would type it in. But that did not work.

Is this a good buy? http://www.mapmyindia.com/store/full...buy-and-review

Or should I look elsewhere? I will be driving extensively in Europe and need a fool proof gps device. Suggestions please.

Since you plan to drive around Europe, won't it be a better idea to check with "specialists" who have been operating in this area for quite some time (Garmin, Tomtom etc.)?? MMI's USP was that their Indian maps (and POIs) were much more accurate than the other vendors.

MapMyIndia Navigation - Review

Currently I have MMI Zx350 and am not happy with the performance as many times in rural areas it takes inside town and to narrow streets. This is inspite of opting for fastest route.

Not getting alternate routes too while searching for a route.

Do not want to use online maps due to higher tariff while roaming. Please suggest a good navigation equipment within a budget of 12k
TIA

Re: MapMyIndia Navigation - Review

I am planning to instal a MapmyIndia GPS device in my car-Wagon R.

My Queries:

1) Can I place the GPS navigator on the dashboard using the mount provided in the MMI box. I think the mount provided is a windshield mount. Can this mount be used effectively on the dash as well?
2) The maps needs to be updated. So will I have to immediately update the device and pay Rs. 500/- for that?
3) What is the battery backup for the device.
4) Does the GPS come with a screen guard or that has to be installed from a mobile store.
5) What would be an ideal location of placing the GPS device as I am not comfortable having the GPS at bang centre of the windscreen.

Look forward to your responses.

The mount that comes with the MMI is a windshield mount and it won't firmly fix on the dashboard. You need to buy mobile mounts that can be fixed on the dashboard. The device gets heated up and so it's better to mount close to air vents.

What's your MMI device model and map version number ? The latest map coverage version number is 9.1. Consider updating if you really need to. If you are planning to buy a new one, by default, the new devices are loaded with the latest version.

3) What is the battery backup for the device.
The battery back up of the device is very poor which comes to 120 minutes on a full recharge. If you are planning to use this for a long drive, it's compulsory that you must plug in to your charging port. So it's better to mount the device close to the charging port.

The device doesn't come with a screen guard. Most of the devices comes with a stylus but it's better to install one from the local mobile shops.

Windshield mount will be very firm and if you don't like to place it on the windshield, you can try placing at the centre of the dashboard, close to air vents and so on. There are so many mobile cradles available for you based on where you decide to mount but please do take care that the mount should be firm and close to the charging port. The biggest disadvantage of windshield mount is that the device is prone to sunlight and this also might heat the device.Don't leave the device in the car post usage for safety reasons. This link might be helpful for you on mobile cradles.

Re: MapMyIndia Navigation - Review

+1 to grand drive comments.
I have a Zx350 & the battery life doesnt last an Hour (approx).
Also , I keep in the center of the dashboard on a windshield mount & in day time you cannot see the screen & some adjusting is called for.

Also Couswheels observations are bang on- twice I have entered small villages in the dead of the night(2-4 am) instead of going around due to the directions given. So often I keep my phone's google maps also on just to be sure.

If I am to go ahead with the MMI mount, considering it is out of the box and people have commented that the mount is of decent quality, I planned to put it here:

MapMyIndia Navigation - Review-satnavda.jpg
Picture is for representation and to depict my intended positioning of the device.

Any comments/suggestions?

If you intend to position the device as per the representation picture, please make sure that the charging cable doesn't distract you while driving.

When I purchased the MMI device, they also provided a plastic plate kind of thing. It had double tape on one side. This plate could be stuck to the dashboard (or any plastic surface), and the suction cup of the mount to be placed on the top of the plate.

Max 1- 1.5 hours is what I get

If a plastic sheet stuck on the screen can be called as "screen guard", then my device has it. It is the same type which comes when you buy new electronic devices. And once it starts peeling off, you cannot fix it back.

I generally place it in the traditional position. Middle of the wind screen, below the rear view mirror. During day time, I need to tilt it a bit so that the glare does not mess up the screen display. On the right hand corner, I generally have the mobile phone holder.

Re: MapMyIndia Navigation - Review

Ideally the device should be mounted closest to the charging point and in such a way that the charging cable does not come in the way or cause inconvenience while using car's A/C controls, audio, wiper controls, steering etc. Here's my MMI LX340 mounted in my car

MapMyIndia Navigation - Review-gps.jpg

The mount provided by MMI is quite sturdy and I have been using the device for the past two years. The mount never fell from the windshield on rough roads.

Dear Driver
It is replaceable but the cost implication may not be justifiable.

IIRC, the screen replacement cost is in the range of Rs. 3K or so.
You get the updated LX345 @ Rs. 4.5 K with updated Black Ver. 9.1 Maps.

So, makes better sense to invest in the newer model.

Re: MapMyIndia Navigation - Review

Hi Guys,
I had purchased a in dash mapmyindia system for my Grand Vitara about a year ago and when I had given my Vitara for service the navigation memory card has been stolen. So now when I try to use the navigation function the system says no memory card.

I called mapmyindia and they say I need to buy a new card with maps for a cost of about Rs. 4000/- which I consider is very high and unfair. The memory card will work only on a mapmyindia system and they should provide the memory cards at very reasonable prices.

I recently bought another in dash mapmyindia system for my Captiva. I tried copying the files from the card provided for the Captiva system and I successfully copied the files on to another memory card. However when I tried to use the card in my Grand Vitara system its not working.

Can anyone advice me on how can I make the navigation system work on my Grand Vitara without incurring much cost.
